Carluke is the junction station for the Lanark branch line, a branch line with no intermediate stations. Slough is also a junction station where a line with no intermediate stations branches off the main line.

From 1923 until 1965 Huntingdon was known as Huntingdon North to distinguish it from Huntingdon East on the long closed line between Cambridge and Kettering.

Carrbridge is also located at a remotely controlled passing loop on the Highland main line.

Pitlochry is controlled from Stanley Junction and Carrbridge from Inverness.

After Cheltenham Spa and Bristol Parkway, Temple Meads is typically the third station into the South West on Edinburgh to Plymouth services. Going in the opposite direction, the third station into the North East is Newcastle.
