I didn't want to say that as I thought some might be offended! Although NR do have a rule which is "when carrying out engineering works at night in built up areas, it is compulsary to try and disturb everyone's sleep by shouting down the line to other workers, selecting the squeakiest and loudest train and talking too loud on mobiles!"

In defence of NR (Rare I know), Why buy a house near a railwayline & then moan about the noise, we are not a 9 to 5 operation. Besides mostly we were here first. When I was a signalman at Hartlebury I had a woman come over & say "Can you stop the trains further away from My house, My son is asleep as he is on nights". Hartlebury box had one stop signal & they had bought & moved into the old stationmasters house...............Go figure.

Probably getting their own back for any noise on roads or made by people walking past their house during the daytime when they're trying to sleep. I love doing the same thing to people in my house at around 5am on a Friday morning when they do it to me at around midnight on the Thursday night

Before any planned night work, we do a leaflet drop in the local area advising our planned work times and dates.
It's all very well saying we should be considerate, but our work is noisey by nature.
If you don't shout, you don't get heard. If you don't get heard, things don't get done and you end up with a safety incident or a delay.

Of course, if it is a safety-critical thing then you would have to be exceptionally stupid to suggest people shouldn't shout.

I imagine that workmen do keep it down (or at least, should) unless there is a good reason to have to shout.

LOL that house was bought for £250,000 back in the 90's. Housing crisis my ass.
As a side note Coton hill yard(shrewsbury) is being bulldozed away to make room for more housing, will this be affordable housing for the less fortunate in life, will it bollox. It's more bling culture crap that no one can afford. When some fools buy it they will moan about the noise from the trains...............for gods sake I want a time machine to get out of this modern life we live in.

Missing some highly important rules.

After every train you dispatch it's a well earned break.
Chippy numbers must be in notes and directions
Priorities is a drink
If working on GWR sets the term Go When Ready applies
If your falling down the embankment as a guard the first thing you say is "don't drop that token"

Now since health and safety has kicked in you NEVER run so you take a stressless stroll to your train ensuring 30 seconds before departure and 2 minutes at major stations.

At the back of your notes you must have a complete list of excuses including technical fault and Tommy Teapot couldn't get alight.

In order to pass out you must know how to read the metro inside and out

To pass out on Thomas you must know all the names, the whole CD and how to fold buggies like a pro and still keep your drink up right.

Also included i got some Subway vouchers, Snappys Pizza leaflet and a AM radio for Talk Sport and BBC 5 live.

Oh and if you got the press coming, stand with all the on train staff talking looking busy outside.

aargh! I get fed up of the TV being used for Sky Sports on Saturdays, when nobody is watching the CCTV tv next to it! and also, some people treat their radio like a teddy bear, wandering around with it to their ear!

it's not a station house, read closer it was a house built for railwaymen at Colwick sidings when the line opened in the 1800s. It is on the normal market, as are all the others down 'round here. It's not a special design like station or gatekeeper's houses unfortunately, can't afford that!!ad:
