Starting "long"?

Good evening,

I am travelling on a return part of a ticket from Cooden Beach to Birmingham Moor Street via London Victoria/Marylebone tomorrow on Southern/Chiltern and wish to start a couple of stops earlier (Bexhill). The price for the two journeys (Super Off Peak Return) is exactly the same. Does this entitle me to make this extended journey?

The ticket is not valid for the section of the journey from Bexhill to Cooden Beach. Before advising on the best course of action, may I ask have you used the out portion yet?

I don't think so unless you get a zero value excess on it first.

Assuming you start your journey when the booking office is open, I would presest the existing ticket and request an overdistance excess to start at Bexhill.

However, some peoples' interpretation of the rules is that this can only be issued to travel beyon the destination on the ticket (in this case Birmingham), so would argue that the excess should not be issued. In the case that the booking clerk takes this view and refused the excess, then you should pay the fare to Cooden Beach, assuming the train you wish to travel on is booked to call there.

Thanks very much for the information. It's just occured to me I would be within my rights to travel Bexhill to London Charing Cross via St Leonards Warrior Square thus starting at a later station based on this "anti-clockwise" journey. The ticket is Any Permitted.

There is no Super Off-Peak Return Cooden Beach - Birmingham Moor Street routed Any Permitted. Do you have a Super Off-Peak Return Cooden Beach - Birmingham Stations route + Via High Wycombe?

If so, that allows you to join at Bexhill and travel via St Leonards. Without an excess or another ticket, it does not allows you to join at Bexhill and travel via Eastbourne.
