Folks,
Could you please advise me on jobs that you can do on Station or Depot and their job titles. I am currently in the Armed Forces and after a long career i am looking at a career on the Railways.

Obviously i would need to start in a job having no experience.

Thanks Folks

You can start most jobs on the Railway with no experience. Look out for Guard/Train Manager, Trainee Driver, Depot Driver, Platform Staff/Customer Service, although many companies have different names for the same role so check the job description. Armed Forces experiences is ideal for the railway, there are a lot of ex military (myself included!) working here.

Best thing to do is find out which companies operate from your local station(s) and check their websites daily, as popular jobs are sometimes only advertised for a couple of days or so.

When I was coming to the end of my 12 month notice period in the forces, I literally applied for the first thing that came up and then started applying for jobs internally. I was fortunate in that at the time I didn't really have to worry about salary as I didn't have kids then!

Thanks BG Mike,
I have actually applied for 3 Trainee drivers jobs, one i have passed the stage 1 tests and the other two i am still waiting for a reply. However the recruitment process is so long and drawn out i feel like just applying for a Station type job just to get myself on the ladder! Then go from there!

Regards

Can someone help me with some answers? Does anyone know if there is any other TOC than Scotrail work from the Perth Station? Also does 2 strikes and your out only count for drivers?

Cheers.

That's definately a good idea, once you're in you can relax a bit. Also, a lot of vacancies, especially trainee driver ones, are advertised internally only, so you have a much better chance of success.

The convoluted application process for trainee driver jobs, especially external, is well known and unfortunately is here to stay. Keep plugging at your applications, don't be scared to email HR for updates and gentle reminders, you can always turn down offers for other roles if you are successful.
