My son is coming up from London to Edinburgh on an ECML Off Peak Super Saver.
We have a funeral in Durham, and he is planning on driving down with us, and then starting his return from Durham (Sun afternoon), not Edinburgh. Can anyone see any problems with this (hard to see why, but I tried this once with an airline ticket (miss one connecting flight out) and found I had invalidated my whole return trip).

No problems at all - your son's ticket is valid for him to board at Durham instead of Edinburgh.

Just be careful if you try to do this in future as on some tickets (usually advance) this cannot be done, and you'd have to buy new ticket on the day.

Only advance (not sure if it applies, almost certain it does though), and megatrain, otherwise it's (or should be) fine

It's a debatable issue with some promotional and Advance tickets.

But with the return portion of any walk-up ticket, there is no question that it is totally valid and will be accepted.
