I have now handed my notice in and start my new job at Northern on the 20th October. A lot sooner than I expected, as I was told to wait until I'd had my drugs and alcohol test (25th Sept) but they said if I think I'll pass (which I will) then no point waiting.

Just want to say a big thanks to any advice I have been given on here and also the various job vacancies that members post. I will keep my ear to the ground at Northern and if I hear anything on the job front, I will keep you all posted.

Cheers

Bit risky handing in notice before having a signed contract in your hands is it not?

Congrats mate, good luck in your new job. Exciting times. Handing your notice in before you sign a contract is quite risky but think these timescales are standard by the looks of it. I'd do the same and have nothing to worry about coming up as a fail. Still make me quite nervous though.

Well done. I have found the key to a successful career in that field for you.

Rearrange the following words:

1. Call 2. First 3. Never 4. Rail 5. Ever 6. Support Services.

Yes mate, for the time being, just put my notice in.

They're not a bad firm really depending of course on what you're used to. I've certainly worked for worse.

Where you off to mate and what doing?

Its my first job in the rail industry. I am gonna be based in York HQ, which isnt too bad with being from Donny but no direct Northern train to York so I'll have to wait till I get my ATOC priv card before I can take advantage of a priv season ticket :D

I'm a driver mate and gonna give freight a whirl. You hear quite a bit of moaning from Northern staff, some of it's justified but they're really not a bad firm to work for.

I've enjoyed it anyway, good luck.

I work for the Civil Service now and hear moaning all day, so I am prepared: D

Good luck in your new job mate

You're going to be for a shock mate, particularly if you're going to HH, 0200 starts for 12 hrs, PNBs up to the 9th hour etc.....good luck though,
