Stansted Airport ticket barriers installation.

I noticed on the Stansted Express website that it says ticket barriers are being installed at Stansted Airport and will be in operation from the 30th of June which is Monday next week.

Ticket gates will be in operation at Stansted Airport Train Station from Monday 30th June. Please note Contactless and Oyster methods of payment are not valid at Stansted Airport.

I am surprised that it has taken them so long. I would have expected them to install ticket barriers decades ago at such a major busy station. It has always baffled me that they have never had ticket barriers here. They spend all this money on having revenue protection staff manually check tickets almost every day.

If the ticket barriers are programmed properly than this will be good news. No more arguing with the jobsworth revenue staff about using Elsenham tickets.

Yes they were mostly installed when I was there a few weeks ago, but open till they start operation I assume. They're installing them so they can bring contactless to the airport. I assume they will have similar levels of staffing till it does come, so they can continue to penalty fare people using contactless.

When the station opened it, like many other stations, was open. And Stansted Express was a very different service. It was premium. First class was good and had free refreshments, standard had low density seating, ample luggage space. The trains had an onboard payphone. You didnt need to buy a ticket before you boarded. Every train had an on-board host/hostess and part of their job was to sell tickets. This even applied on journeys from Liverpool Street where staff would allow passengers onto the platform without a ticket.

Why has it taken so long to install barriers? Maybe MAG weren't happy about the idea but have come round to the idea that contactless is both desirable and inevitable? Maybe GA/NR expected MAG to contribute towards the cost but MAG, being notoriously stingy, refused?

I suspect a big reason is that there are something like 15 access points to the platforms, some of which emerge into what would notionally be regarded as the "paid" area.

But obviously with Stansted being brought into Oval, it at least needs validators.

The lifts are certainly in an awkward place being part way down the platform, as are the ticket machines, but with Oval coming you can see why barriers are now needed, regardless of the various access points.

Was on Stansted Express yesterday and it was announced that the barriers are now in operation, together with the warnings against travelling with Oyster or contactless.

About time! Hopefully alighting from an Express service and heading into airport will now be a bit more speedier, rather than standing on a big queue while 1 possibly 2 people manually check tickets.

Tbh though 12 car brand new Stadler trains are pretty good too though? I've never not got a seat (if I walk down the platform significantly) even at peak hours. I suppose no onboard payphone though

Has anyone attempted to use a valid ticket not specifically to Stansted Airport to pass through the gateline? Does it open without issue?

There are ungated stations on Oval, and at the next rollout there will be loads more. Validators are needed, but not gates. However I can totally see the benefits of them at Stansted.

There's engineering work between Cambridge and Stansted over the last weekend. Has anyone tried to use a Cambridge London GA only super off peak ticket to pass through the gateline and does it work?

Can confirm the Stansted gatelines are wrongly programmed for rejecting valid ticket according to my recent experience. I've tried GA London Cambridge weekend super off peak return ticket and GA only advance ticket with itinerary changing at Stansted, all rejected with code 57 (PPT INVLD - Location not covered by PPT, Barcode: NLC not valid). The super off peak ticket works fine in Bishops Stortford and the advance ticket works fine in another changing station of my advance itinerary.

An advance changing at SSD shouldn't let you through the barriers, as break of journey isn't permitted.

Break of journey restrictions do not prohibit passing gatelines at stations where a change is booked (or on a permitted route in the case of walk up fares). This may be necessary to access station facilities.

They might have done it deliberately to discourage it if the fare undercuts one to the airport, though.

Which wouldn't be the case after 7 Dec upon contactless & single leg pricing being introduced, the new price would be £16.4 (London Stansted off peak fare split at Bishops Stortford) VS £17.8 (London Cambridge GA only weekend super off peak)
