Did they really need to specify that the seated position be facing forward?

Well, it does say the "normal position". I suppose you could have a side facing position for shunting if a loco cab has windows at the back and a narrow body.

In steam days standing to drive was very much the norm - while I think there was normally a seat of some sort, don't know how much it was used.

In the film 'The Elephant will never Forget' about the end of London's (traditional) trams there is scene of the driver, with the narrator wondering what his thoughts are of tomorrow, when for the first time in his life he will be sitting down to drive (which will be a bus)

When I started on NSE a lot of slam door stock drivers drove standing to take the pressure off their wrists holding the DSD down, I often used to stand driving 73s because of the dreadful seats and horrible mushroom DSD button

I would certainly hope so, although I doubt whether anyone would spend cash on the 'standard' 73s, I've found one picture via google of a 73/9 cab which shows a modern foot pedal along with a completely redesigned cab, they've even gone and nicked the double power controller

I think it was common for tram drivers to stand although not so these days from what I've seen. I think they often stand on the Manx Electric Railway though.

Stood up in 315’s and 317’s and can stand on 345’s when it drives itself. Makes a dull day that little bit brighter.

HS2 requires the ability to stand up while driving the train in ATO so should have better provision than the 80Xs.

Anyone have recommendation for seat cushions/boosters etc for short drivers? I’m 5ft 1 and drive 15X, 156 and 158s and my back and neck are killing me.

On the Underground S stock was designed with standing in mind, the unions were involved in the cab design.
