Standing in the shop, VT.

Just wondering if there is a general rule (safety I presume) regards standing in the shop having a chat/glass of wine when on longish journeys?

Was 'moved on' last night on a delayed EUS-GLA service. Asked to return to our seats by the guard. No one else in the shop, but a bank holiday train with entire families sitting in vestibule ends etc. The guard's reason was we were in the way of the magazine rack I think. Was just a bit weird. Obviously respect that the guard is responsible for the whole train which may be stressful so we complied. Is there a "you must be seated" rule?

p.s. professional couple, not generally loutish.

I would imagine that you're potentially interfering in the operation of the train (the shop in this case) and I suspect he has a right to move you on. Don't quote me on it though

Not really a rule on it, but staff dont tend to like you loitering in the shop area where possible, its not a bar area but a functioning shop which other passengers at their will may wish to use. I'd have moved you on too I'm afraid respectable couple or likewise

Totally agree - there isn't the room in the shop for you to use it as a bar. I used to move people on when I worked as a steward...

Yes, it's not like a bar area with stand-up tables as you might see on the Eurostar or on a continental European train, it is as the name suggests, a shop.

Busy pendolinos are difficult to get through as it is, the narrow aisles combined with people stood in them, pieces of luggage everywhere (I've seen them right in the centre of the aisle and in the vestibule), people with their feet in the aisle, when two people pass and there is no room to do so it's pretty awkward.

Yeah I often worked the shop on the Voyagers in my XC days and it did my head in when passengers would just stay there and have conversations whilst others had to squeeze past them

Were you occupying seats and then not using them while generally causing an obstruction in the carriage walkway and shop? can you not see why the guard would ask you to return to your seats? seems a wee bit arrogant to me.

Maybe she was waiting for some change! Having a "host" in Standard Class is a bit deceiving anyway!

And when was that "advert" broadcast!? Who made it? I've never seen that version before!

I've got to admit I do like VT's adverts, but then again I'm thinking in the back of my mind: "Part of my train fare is going toward that!"

My mum thought it was hilarious when I told her that the sign read 'Shagsborough tunnel'....she didn't believe me either

Sorry, just noticed the comment about the champagne - admins, sorry to deviate so hugely off topic!

The advert is not a literal interpretation of the girl's journey, from the very beginning we the obvious theme is dreams - the first sign of this is when Beckie looks at the CIS and see her train to Manchester Piccadilly become 'MY MAN!', it is obvious that she is travelling to see her boyfriend and that is where she wants to be.

Next it becomes obvious that the girl is in love, hence the love heart on the window, she's dreaming, indicated by the 'enchanted' forest with it's sparkling trees and the gathering of men by the side of the line. The Steward opens a bottle of water which turns to champagne popping open, reflecting her dream to be married.

Skipping on a bit, the final scene where she meets her boyfriend is the only significant one that is naturalistic, since it is what happened. This reflects the fact that's there's no need for her to dream, since she is where she wants to be - tying in with the advert's tagline "Where do you want to be?"

Those shops never look very pleasent for the staff to work in compared with the old spacious buffet cars. The magazines etc opposite the counter are impossible to access because the corridor is so narrow!

On top of that you have people ordering hot food (by which they shove it in the microwave for a minute or so) but the customer naturally hangs around. Of course it could be that Voyagers and/or Pendos don't offer this facility in which case this post is completely useless

And the 19.20 shouldn't be on platform 4. And heading north you would do Shugborough tunnel before Stoke and the 19.20 shouldnt even be running that route via Stafford. And why is it arriving in Picc at xx:03 past the hour when its scheduled in at 21.28?

I'm also sure its not a "host" in standard but someone on a trolley service and yes you can get sparkling wine at a bargain price of 2 bottles for £6.00!

And no I don't like people standing in the shop, at times it can't be helped but it just makes the shop look busy, may put people off using it but most of all, if you have a seat, enjoy it!

Obviously the most dream-like feature is that she has a seat with a window view, rather than a bulkhead, and that the airconditioning and reservation systems are working, that she isn't squeezed into a tiny space by someone only very slightly weightier and wider than the average, and so on....

/grumble grumble grumble. Sorry, you may guess I am not a fan of pendolinos
