Those would be m-tickets then.

Basically:
- needs an app and to be activated = m-ticket
- doesn't need an app, or to be activated, and can be popped in your Apple Wallet or just shown on screen or on paper = eTicket

The barcode's the same in both.

I think you've missed my point - the TPE tickets you buy on your phone have both qualities - they can only be shown in an app, not email or printed (like an m ticket), but they don't need activating (like an e ticket)

LNR does it differently - any e-ticket you buy can also be downloaded as a classic m-ticket (requiring activation) in the app. Doing this does not so far as I can tell invalidate the e-ticket itself.

The names 'e-ticket' and 'm-ticket' are confusing and sound like synonyms to the lay person. They'd have been better off calling them something like 'barcode tickets' and 'app tickets'

Interestingly, thetrainline is now offering me an e ticket for a TPE advance from York to Leeds this evening. Quite surprising as I was expecting to activate it, but it came up with this:
