That doesn't help when they've booked a seat and have a reasonable expectation they'll be able to use it!

Not that it completely excuses it but could it have been a late notice change by Avanti well after the booking window for these dates became available as its certainly possible to block J from first class bookings as is the case on weekends/bank holidays.

One might have thought that yesterday (Wednesday) was a normal business day; when it became clear, possibly at a late stage, that almost no-one was booking First that day there was a last minute change of plan. Both directions First was unusually quiet for a working day (apart from me, 2 on the Down and 1 Up, I think), possibly everyone postponed until normal service today.
