Standard Class 5 4-6-0 Names

In January 1959 the Southern Region announced that it was going to name twenty of its Standard class 5 4-6-0’s (73080-73089 & 73110-73119) using names previously carried by King Arthur class engines. This was carried out on a piecemeal basis over a long period.

I have been able to trace the dates when all but two of these engines actually received their names but have not been able to find the dates when both 73111 King Uther or 73119 Elaine received their nameplates.

Is there anyone out there who knows?

There certainly appeared to be a lack of urgency to fit the nameplates onto these locos. The engines seemed to have acquired the plates when going through Eastleigh Works for overhaul, the last recipient being 73088 during a heavy repair in May 1961. The nameplates, when fitted on the running plate of the Standard 5s looked somewhat insignificant, which was unfortunate as the locos were allocated a splendid batch of names!

I remember, many years ago,reading an article by an American travel writer saying that only in England would anyone name a railway locomotive Sir Bors de Ganis.

The names allocated to the Standard Class 5s were chosen from the earlier Urie Arthurs. Later N15 builds at NBL, often referred to as the Scottish Arthurs, carried some poor choice names of Knights. Sir Ironside and Sir Dodinas le Savage also spring to mind!

Where is @30907 when you need him?

I never consciously saw an original N15 Arthur, but I thought their nameplates were over the splasher, and therefore curved.

The Standard 5 'Arthurs' (of which I think I saw all 20, certainly most of them) were straight, narrow things which were fitted on the high, straight frames. So no, not the same nameplates.

But someone will rapidly appear to correct me if I'm wrong.

OH GOSH - just checked a photo in my 1961-62 combined volume, which shows 30768 (?) and the nameplate looks straight. So maybe it's my brain that is bent

EDIT: The SR always was careful with the dosh, so that would explain why they could justify the cost of naming steam locos so late. A couple of holes drilled and an hour or two's labour, and it was done.

Just having a dig around the net found the nameplates off the two St Uther’s. The first off the King Arthur passed through auction a couple of years ago. The second shows the one from the Standard 5 on display at the NRM.

You flatter me though, engine nameplates (other than my own!) isn't my specialist subject and I don’t ever recall seeing an Arthur (though I probably did) or a named 5.
