Stamford (Lincs) station seems to be managed by East Midlands Trains, yet very few EM trains actually use it. Are there many other stations like this?

Coleshill Parkway is operated by LM but only XC trains call there. The same applies to Water Orton.

Dean and Mottisfont & Dunbridge on the line between Romsey and Salisbury are FGW managed stations only ever served by SWT.

In the case of XC I believe it was decided when the ex Central routes were transferred that the stations that only they serve were nothing like enough in number to justify them taking on all the admin costs. There are economies of scale in leaving them with LM and EMT, as they are only a very small fraction of their respective station numbers.

The original XC franchise, ie excluding those transferred routes, didn't have any stations either, but if I'm not mistaken all their stations had other TOCs calling as well.

That will apply to Narborough and South Wigston as well I guess.

I am glad I resiste the temptation to say Oakham and Melton Mowbray because they do recieve the daily London train. (Or is it two per day?)

Does Stamford ever see calls on the Nottingham to Peterborough routing via Loughborough and Syston North?

Who manages Wilncote, Tamworth and Burton-upon Trent, as I suppose there are candidates on that line as well.

Manea- operated by NXEA, all the NXEA services pass through it, XC have some stop. I think I'm right in saying that XC operate no stations? Most of the stations in this situation are small, and managed by area management by the "local" TOC- with the main duty being maintainence.

(Similarly, Lockerbie is a long way from any other fTPE or Virgin managed stations)

1st point - correct

2nd and 3rd point - Indeed it is 2 london trains a day 06:11 (ex Melton Mowbray) and 17:25 (ex Derby). Oakham Melton and Stamford also have 2 Nottingham - Norwich services (i believe 05:44 and 07:00 from oakham?) Also there the Spalding to Nottingham dogbox departs oakham 21:59. There's also a Corby to Derby service leaving Oakham 09:52 and the evening service from london departs oakham 19:45 (terminates at Melton)

Balcombe station is managed by Southern but on Saturdays only FCC stop there. No idea know why Saturdays are different in this way.

Yet another example of the complete shambles that we are now stuck with following the "Privatisation" of British Rail. Not only has it been fractured all over the place, with pages of 'agreements' replacing 'someone actually doing the work as it is needed'. I don't see the old BR through 'Rose coloured glasses', I used to work for them for many years, but when it was destryed by the Major Governement, they were actually doing very well and things were looking up.

The simple thing would be which TOC used the station most, then that TOC should be responsable for it, but that is practical, simple and common sense, but for those reasons alone it wont happen.

Tell me, in what way would it be sensible for XC to run Manea? It's actually common sense that NXEA run it, as they run the nearby Whittlesea, March and Ely stations- so they have people and equipment in the area. Now, it might be that it would make more sense for the services that stop there to be the NXEA ones, but that's another matter.

Lockerbie could perhaps be managed by Virgin (it's a long way from any fTPE stations) but having it managed by Scotrail makes some sort of sense.

The strange part really was the desision to have the Nottingham and Leicester to Birmingham local services under Cross Country as opposed to EMT or LM. Personally I'd have extended the Leicester back to Nottingham and given it to EMT and the Birmingham to Nottingham via Tamworth could have been LM. LM could have got a few more Turbostars to cover Nottingham via Tamworth, and given a few more 153s to EMT for Nottingham via Leicester. An additional "fast" (compared to the Lincoln that crawls on the slow line) service between Nottingham and Leicester would help with overcrowding of London trains with local traffic on that section.
