Is a Day Return ticket valid via Liverpool stations and Bidston?

Not sure about Wrexham but I know the only permitted routes between Stalybridge and Chester are via Manchester and Crewe or via Warrington Bank Quay. My guess is Wrexham will be much the same.

It was two years ago when I made the journey and the route was suggested by the NRE journey planner and was accepted by both the TPE guards and barrier staff at Liverpool

Just checked the website now anmd the results are rather interesting. If you look for a return it will only offer fares for the Chester routing at £16 off peak. However if you look for a single, it will offer both routes, Chester at £15.50 and Liverpool & Bidston at £20.70.

Given the original question related to a return ricket, I stand corrected.

Bidston is part of Liverpool group so you can double back between Liverpool Stns and Bidston for interchange only.

Permitted Routes between Stalybridge and Wrexham Grp are:

GM
MR+CL
MR+MS+CH
MS+CH
MS+CL
MS+GM

GM does not have Liverpool Grp on
Nor does MS+CL
MR+MS+CH doesn't work
MS+CH would involve doubling back between Chester and Liverpool Grp so is verboten
MS+CL doesn't work since Liverpool Grp doesn't appear in any of them
MS+GM doesn't have Liverpool Grp on either.


Therefore the route is not permitted

NREs does give an option of going via Liverpool but you have to buy more than one ticket

Just seen that, having checked the website. Think at the time I must have only checked my outward journey on NRE and wrongly assumed a return would have the validity.

If a route seems reasonable to the guard they are not going to query it, irrespective of what the RG says.

If you have concerns over the validity of a route, then if a route is shown in the NRES journey planner (as valid on one ticket), my advice is to print the itinerary and bring it with you. NRES does check (it's own interpretation of) the Routeing Guide.

If you have concerns and are in a position to do so, find a website that will sell you a ticket with the itinerary you require (there are several booking engines now, some allow things that others do not, and vice-versa) and request reservations (where available) and bring the reservation coupons / itinerary with you.

To check a route is valid, other than checking a journey planner, you can check the Routeing Guide manually. Bear in mind that some reasonable routes may not be permitted by the guide, but some unreasonable routes (that most guards will not accept without reservations/itineraries as described above) will be.

If you are attending tomorrow's Fares Workshop (I think you are? can't remember now!) then you will be shown how to do the following yourself very easily and quickly (trust me! )



Valid Routes from Stalybridge [SYB] to Wrexham General [WRX]:

1. Direct trains are always valid (Stalybridge to Wrexham General in this case - there are none)
2. Shortest Route is always valid(This is likely to be 59 miles via Runcorn East) plus routes up to 3 miles longer

   Stalybridge - WREXHAM GROUP:
   • GM
   • MR + CL
   • MR + MS + CH
   • MS + CH
   • MS + CL
   • MS + GM

I'd also like to point out that the ticket type makes no difference to the routeing validity. So it does not matter that you require a Day return, and whether the type is Anytime, Off Peak, etc. The routeing applies to all ticket types.

Ah, that's it, no worries. Well not long now until hopefully all becomes clear! But it's a good idea to consider these things before the Workshop so we can build on them on the day, it'll 'click' soon enough!
