I've been back in the area for a couple of weeks and spent some time in the local historical society. They had a treasure trove of reports and images which I don't have permission to reproduce but I will post one.
Having read the report of the 1951 railtour up the valley where the train had difficulty over the expired pointwork at Stainland, I assumed the branch just soldiered on for another eight years until it was unusable. However, judging by this report there was a plan to truncate the line, subsequently shelved and then the whole track was renewed by 1955, only to be closed four years later. Certainly the later images show a pretty healthy permanent way.
Was this unusual or just the way of doing things?
