Just found this on the BBC (sorry if it's been done before, but I can't find it anywhere)...

The Surrey town of Staines is to change its name to Staines-upon-Thames with the aim of promoting its riverside location and boosting its economy.

Spelthorne borough councillors backed the change at a full council meeting on Thursday night after consulting residents and businesses.

Of the 35 councillors who attended, 25 voted for the name change, six abstained and four voted against.

There will be a formal ceremony on 20 May to mark the official renaming.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-surrey-16213204 page is two months old

I can see the logic behind it, but I don't think Staines is big enough to justify the explanations they've given. It is also harder to say than most places next __________-(up)on-Thames, given the three S phonemes...

I thought they wanted to change it to lose the connatations it has gained over the years, at least that's what I heard when it was banded round a couple of years ago.

Staines upon Taimes?
Perhaps they might have had an argument 10 years ago when Ali G was all the rage, but when Councils are constantly telling us they have to make Cuts here, there & everywhere, it's funny how they can always seem to find something pointless very important that they need to spend money on, doesn't it. :-/

Well, Royal Wootton Bassett sounds more, well, upmarket than Staines upon Thames, you must admit. There's only so much you can do with the word "Staines", after all.

We lost Staines and Ashford in 1965 I think it was. At least we still have the cricker club and postal address.

I was born on the banks of the Thames in Middlesex upstream of Staines.

Oh! good old Hamble became Hamble-le-Rice and Bitterne in Southampton became Bitterne Village. Both stations I think have not changed their names.

Where next?
Hmm, maybe by as early as next week, Abingdon-on-Thames

http://www.abingdonblog.co.uk/?p=5675

" At the last meeting Abingdon Town Council voted to change the name of Abingdon to Abingdon-on-Thames. It has been announced “The Vale of White Horse District Council is to consider a request from Abingdon Town Council to change the name of the parish of Abingdon to Abingdon-on-Thames when councillors meet on Wednesday 22 February 2012."

I still can't work which of Abingdon and Staines is grimmer. Quite probably Abingdon, in fact, despite the presence of a small historic quarter actually by the river itself.

Being as Clapham now seems to include a lot of what should be called Battersea anyway (thanks, Clapham Junction station)...

And the irony is that Clapham Jnc got it's name so as to disassociate itself from Battersea which, at the time, was considered down market.

Anyway, a solution to the Staines problem would be to rename the place 'St. Aines'.

Don't! I was on my way back from Glasgow via the ECML a few years ago, and sat opposite me on the table was a middle aged couple who had enjoyed the weekend away. Asking where they were from, they replied (very RP)

"Ooo we are from hertfordshire, the leafy green bit"
"Ah okay, where abouts? I live in West Herts"
"Oh we're from St. Evenage"
"..."

Wet myself laughing at how pompous they were then promptly moved seats as I couldn't take them seriously.

Does anyone think this gentle protest is a little too strong or justified?

Dear Sir,
As someone who was actually born in Staines almost 57 years ago - May 21 1955 - when it was a part of the proud country of Middlesex, I think the idea to change the name of the town is both ridiculous and ill advised. If the towns of Windsor and Reading are quite happy with their respective names, rather than suddenly becoming Windsor-Upon-Thames or Reading-Upon-Thames then why should Staines be any different?
The person who came up with this barmy idea obviously has no grasp ot the amount of taxpayers money it will take to implement this change. It is far from being a simple matter of changing a few "Welcome to Staines" roadsigns to "Welcome to Staines-Upon-Thames" roadsigns. There is also the enormous waste of dumping official stationery emblazoned with the current name and spending money on brand new stationery. Elaborate (expensive) signs on public buildings will be changed. What about the expense to private businesses who will need to change both stationery and signage on vehicles to reflect this totally unnecessary change?
Is this the work of some public servant approaching retirement, feeling disappointed and disheartened by his lackluster career in public service; and consequently feeling the need to bow out with a bang? Someone, feeling afraid of being totally forgotten and desperately wanting to be remembered for something, albeit the biggest waste of public money since an egotistical London mayor decided to dispense with articulated buses that had served London well and still had a decade or more of service left in them.
Why do these bureaucrats on salaries that the average person can only dream of constantly feel the urge to spend money that doesn't actually belong to them. It is money forced out of ordinary people to pay for public services - which are continually being cut - and not for silly harebrained schemes like this.
Exactly how will a change of name to Staines-Upon-Thames actually benefit the ordinary citizens of Staines and the surrounding areas? Will they consider it money well spent? Of course they won't. Will they want to congratulate the person responsible for coming up with the idea? Of course not, most decent mature intelligent people will feel like lynching the person responsible for such needless waste of scarce resources.
Was the public consulted? Of course not. Why should they be, they are only the pawns paying for this foolishness' and nobody cares about them. Well known fact.
I hope common sense can prevail and this ridiculous idea can be quietly dropped before it is too late. Everyone makes mistakes and errors of judgment, but someone has dropped an almighty clanger here, most likely to make themselves feel important and valuable.
I am thoroughly disgusted with the whole thing.
