I've noticed when on one of their buses this afternoon a notice saying that from Monday, all new smart cards will cost £1. (Currently 50p). Does this mean the price will double each year so next year it'll be £2 etc and eventually will be nearly half the price some megariders currently are?

Who can tell without a crystal ball? I suspect they're trying to find the charge that will encourage customers to reuse them rather than treating them as disposable.

I use the app as a workaround.

It does make the price the same both sides of the border around here as Merseytravel have always had their activation charge for Walrus as £1.

I use the app as a workaround.
The proper workaround is ordering on the website, cards posted out are still free.

Oxford Bus company (Go Ahead) charge £5 to buy a smart card in person in one of their shops compared to free online.
