Two feared dead in Cumbrian school bus crash

Last updated at 17:08, Monday, 24 May 2010

Two people are feared dead and up to 30 injured in an horrific accident on one of Cumbria's busiest roads.

The A66 has been shut following a three-vehicle accident - reportedly involving a school coach - near Keswick.

A number of rescue helicopters are believed to be involved in the response to the collision on the road, which is closed in both directions near Braithwaite, between Keswick and Cockermouth.

Exact details about what has happened are yet to be confirmed and it is not known which school the bus was travelling from.

The accident happened just after 3.45pm.

A Cumbria police spokeswoman said: "At this time, it is believed there are three vehicles involved. The fire service, ambulances and two helicopters are en route to assess the scene.

"The road has been closed off at the Thornthwaite turn off on the A66 from the Cockermouth direction while emergency services deal with the scene. Motorists are advised to use the A591 via the Castle Inn."

Workington... Yay.
3 people now known to have died.

Casualties airlifted to Newcastle, Carlisle, Preston.

One of dead has been confirmed as the driver of a Honda Civic which was involved. I sincerely hope that no one from my school has died  My thoughts go out to the family, friends and colleagues of the people involved.

Cumbria Police have now confirmed that ONLY the Civic and JB Pickthall coach were involved.

Personally, I reckon 2 people in the civic have died, and one from the coach.

I'm not speculating any further.

Change to Preston Services

Timetable changes

Service Update

From Monday 7th June, the following changes will be made to our Preston Network:

81 Preston - Ashton - Fulwood Janice Drive
Lancashire County Council will withdraw this service. Whilst alternative services are available throughout the route, Janice Drive and Conway Drive will now be served by the new Service 4A. Service 4A will run between Preston and Fulwood via Garstang Road and Sharoe Green Lane on a similar timetable.

4A Preston - Royal Preston Hospital - Fulwood Janice Drive
Lancashire County Council will introduce this new service, partially replacing Service 81 and Preston Bus Ltd's Service 7.

* Operating hourly Monday to Saturday daytime this service will run via Garstang Road, Withy Trees Junction & Watling Street Road to provide an additional service in this area. Stagecoach will continue to operate this service on behalf of Lancashire County Council.

New 4A Timetable

as far as i understand it, there will be no changes to the Preston fleet with these changes. the Solo from the 81 service will be used on the new 4A service.

not North West, but Stagecoach have ordered 16 Plaxton Elite's for National Express work. 5 are supposedly replacing Plaxton Paragons at Peterborough, 5 replacing Caetano Levante's at Oxford (Levante's to move to Dover) and 6 to Chesterfield replacing Caetano Levante's (again, Levante's to move to Dover).

Nothing to report today. Extremely tough day yesterday  Been helping out some of the younger students today who witnessed the tragic crash yesterday afternoon, including friends of the deceased. I'm extremely proud of the support given by staff and other pupils, at this most difficult time. Five pupils are still in a critical condition in hospitals throughout the county, and further afield.

Indeed. Absolutely tragic.
Glad to hear you've been helping Ross.

I just hope Ross Pickthall (I think he's on here, just never posts) is coping OK....

Will have to try and get a few last rides on these Leylands before they leave us for good! Is 14208 timetabled like that on purpose or is it just the way the dice fall?

20473 been flying around, complete with a "newly" fitted ticket machine! it didn't have a ticket machine at all last month, didn't even have the base unit or any wiring! all 3 displays were programmed and in use too.

33168 on Harrington along with 47062.
47024 and 47060 on Seaton.
20757 was doing some catch up 50's later on.
