On the subject of 16331 being scrapped..
As far as I know a few Volvo olympians including 16355/16397 and a few more have been sitting in Lilyhall depot for more than a year now. Does anyone know the future of them? I presume they aren't going back into service round here so are they likely to get scrapped or sold to another company?
Also how about the ones only withdrawn recently?

The only Olympians on reserve are 16184, 16336, 16714/34/76. The rest are disposal and are most likely to head to Trevor Wigley's for 'recycling' (a.k.a scrapping).

Seen this morning driving north up the M6, ex-First, Stagecoach branded Northern Counties Palatine Volvo Olympian, (I think) P296 KPX (First 34296/Stagecoach 16196) following a Stagecoach branded First liveried Wrightbus Gemini decker (number/reg unable to get).

Going for repaint?

Why brand a bus, just for it to leave the fleet.:idea:

It's been branded for Honister slate mine to replace the older bus they had which has gone for scrap.

The expected decision on the Wigan takeover by the OFT si 25th February. However, the key word there is EXPECTED. The OFT can reach a decision before then, but not publicly announce such a decision until 25th February. This is already examined in the thread about the OFT announcing Arriva's takeover of Midland has been cleared, but the ok was given a couple of weeks beforehand.

Indeed I believe they are also doing fuel comparison. With Arriva getting brand new hybrids for the QBP that First used old Gems on SC may consider upgrading it at some point.

News & Star said:
30 jobs to go as bus services axed in Carlisle

Thirty jobs will go at a Cumbrian bus firm when it slashes services next month.
Reays Coaches of Wigton is to stop running its numbers 63, 63a, 64 and 70 City Hopper routes in Carlisle.
The firm says the move - on a date to be confirmed by the Traffic Commissioner - will lead to the 30 losses, mainly drivers.
Managing director Chris Reay said the decision had been taken with "deep regret and sadness" but he had no alternative.
Particular routes had not performed as expected and the City Hopper services had been placed under pressure by rival operator Stagecoach.
Staff were told about the decision at a meeting at the company’s Carlisle depot off London Road yesterday.
Reays says its 64a and 75 City Hopper routes will continue and it has plans to improve the 75 route between Dalston and Cotehill via the city centre.
All Reays’ other public bus services in Carlisle and elsewhere across Cumbria remain unaffected. The company’s travel centre in the city centre will remain open.
Its private hire coaches and school bus services will continue to operate as normal.
The company's bus operation will focus more on rural routes and other services linking towns, cities and the Lake District.
The firm added it expects to create 15 jobs this year at its depots in Egremont and Penrith due to the expansion of services.
Reays Coaches - named best independent operator at the 2011 UK Bus Awards - employs 150 staff. It employed 80 before City Hopper was launched in October 2010.

The date showing on VOSA for cancellation is 16th March.

I just wonder if reays will become a niche type of operator, in other words providing services three or four times a day to places elsewhere, such as a bus route from Carlisle to Newcastle Airport, West Cumbria to liverpool Airport, for instance. I'm not sure how economical they'll be, but it may be the way they're heading.

I just also wonder, I know they've recently introduced the 300/301R group of routes, but just how vulnerable wil lthese, and other routes be? And, lastly, they had two hybrids on order. No sign of them yet, will there ever be?

I think they should have stuck to how they were operating as a coach business with a few rural routes and perhaps the odd intercity work. If they carry out what they have planned with the press announcement, I'd say its a viable option for them. They have sampled the big world of city and intercity work so now know how the ball rolls. The case of wanting to be too big too quickly unfortunately and wanting to gobble up all competition with every possible service in every possible way
Never been a huge fan of them with how they operate, but I wish them well.

agreed its a shame but have to say on a recent holiday in the area most of there buses seamed to be full of nothing. I have however used a number of the country runs and these are popular.

Stagecoach was the same in the 80's. The big differance between Reays & Stagecoach, is Reays are using new vehicles, were as Stagecoach used old vehicles, which allowed them to make big profits very fast.;);)

It's showing on VOSA today that 63/63A, 64 and 70 will finish on 28th March, not 16th as was showing yesterday morning.

Stagecoach, like the other big companies, were helped along by deregulation too, expanding rather quickly at little cost.

From my point of view, Reays just kept changing things too much, passengers would finally get used to how a service was operating for it to be changed to something different only weeks later, with little or no notice about the route/timetable change. Fares were another thing to change too, its been reported that a passenger had very recently been charged £3 single to city centre, with the driver claiming cheap fares weren't being sold any more (can only assume that meant the £1 to Town promotion). Services with a lot of buses running almost empty having their frequencies increased to just have more buses running around nearly empty.
Another thing was how services were being "improved" for the empty buses, their changes just seemed to follow what Stagecoach have rather than looking at filling gaps to create new links, almost as if they were kind of admitting that Stagecoach have had it right all along and there wasn't any improvements that could be made in Carlisle. I still think there are a few areas in Carlisle that could be improved, but Reays changing services to copy Stagecoach's more just doesn't make those links.
It makes you wonder about passenger number claims too, when 64, 70 and 74 were improved back in October it was claimed they carried 20,000 passengers per week in Carlisle, then when 300R/302R started the press release in December claimed they were carring 35,000 passengers per week on CityHopper, while buses were still running empty or almost empty. An increase of 15,000 passengers per week in Carlisle alone just seems too good to be true, now there's the claim that services aren't performing as expected.

Is the whole company performing as they claim, even private hires?

Reays new hybrids (two Optare Solos) are due in service 1st March. Firm kindly sent me some pictures. They've also said that once the services are withdrawn, the surplus buses will be freshened up, then oust older Mercedes minibuses elsewhere, or be used on new services being planned.
