Hello! This is a thread I made about Stagecoach bus liveries, meaning bus paintworks. Use this thread to talk about anything do to with Stagecoach's liveries. Repaint announcements are allowed. You can talk about stuff like the new King's Coronation livery and thoughts on Stagecoach's new brand. Enjoy :)

I think the new ones are awful. School bus yellow on premium coach services, and something like a Fisher Price toy on the local buses. Only OK looking one is the green in my view.

Something unique to Stagecoach Cumbria & North Lancashire is when they bought their new buses recently, they weren't in Local, they were in their exclusive Lakes Connections livery.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Recent repaints:
10552: Lakes Connections (555) to Stagecoach Local
15632: Stagecoach Beachball to Stagecoach Local
26252: Stagecoach Beachball (Thanet Loop) to Stagecoach Local

My thoughts on the new set of liveries, pretty awful quite quick to look mucky & messy with mismatch panels. You also have different depots painting differently, for example Stagecoach Yorkshire have black round the front lights & on singles round the windows, East Midlands have no black round windows but on the rear lights & Manchester have blue round the front lights. The less said about the distance School Bus Yellow version the better.

One thing I have noticed with Stagecoach Yorkshire is painting buses into Local then being withdrawn not long after particularly the MAN E300’s. Just seems a waste of paint.

I know what you mean about seperate depots painting differently!
Stagecoach East Scotland's Local painted Optare Solos have different headlight paint to almost every other area of Stagecoach on certain vehicles.

Route branding seems to be slowly making a comeback, with the 64 (Winchester to Alton) and Coastliner 700 having small additions to the rather dreary Local and school bus Yellow liveries.

I do actually like the yellow distance livery, it's quite smart.
I agree, the Distance one is pretty good!

I've noticed some route brandings coming back too, although up here (Stagecoach East Scotland), there's not a single vehicle in local/distance which has route branding.

Also, we've (East Scotland) never had anything like a Queen's Jubilee or a King's Coronation livery or the standard blue-local driver trainer livery. Although if you check bustimes.org, East Scotland does have a few unique liveries for their driver trainers!

There's only ever been one good Stagecoach livery imho, stripes. All others are ordinary at best, downright awful at worst. Which somehow makes stripes even better.

Strong and bold, and like all good things, it divided opinion at the time, even horrifying some traditionalists. It wiped away several much loved liveries, and Busways notably even negotiated a temporary stay. I loved the Busways scheme, but even I would pause if offered a return to stripes or yellow.

The scheme has absolutely stood the test of time, would still look good on today's buses, and looks superb in preservation. You can't conceive of the UK bus scene without it now.

The obvious benefit was obvious, projecting the corporate brand, a basic and obvious marketing tool. It's a sign of its superiority that it worked in that role both when Stagecoach were a small independent trying to crack different markets with various unique selling points, but also later when they were notable for being the dominant incumbent.

I never really knew what the logo meant, but that was part of the charm - this bold new livery sweeping away the old guard was something so modern it was beyond our comprehension. The small but discrete use of a tagline was a nice nod to localism, and unlike other liveries, was presumably not much of a hassle when it came to moving buses around the country.

Given it works on basically any bus or coach model, from a VR to an RH, a Dart to a Premier, a Routemaster to a Lance, and more importantly looks good on all of them, is a good reason to perhaps consider it the best (corporate) bus livery ever invented.

I love it so much, it forms a large part of my 1:72 scale model collection, and I am able to deploy a whole fleet of them. When turned out, they get pride of place, the middle eye-level shelf.

If you see the Stagecoach East Scotland bustimes.org, one service bus holds this livery and one driver trainer has it.

I'm pretty sad Stagecoach Gold has been discontinued and replaced by Local. Gold is amazing imo :|

I'll grant that it was unique and eye-catching, which is always good in a livery. But I have always thought it is a mistake to use (prominent) branding to highlight so called high specification. All it does is remind the rest of your passengers that they're apparently undeserving of such finery. And of course where do you go when (inevitably) these so called luxuries become pretty standard fare. Very poor strategy. Better to create an impression your whole business is important and you are intent on improving everyone's experience equally, with bold new ideas. Stripes did that I think. Stripes on a VR in deepest darkest rural Britian meant you were soon to be riding a brand new RH. Shiny and new, same dependable Stripes. At least that was the theory. And it was perhaps as much for the benefit of those who read the City pages as it was about passengers.

Gold was okay when it was first launched, but it's looking very tired and dated now.

I guess it doesn't really advertise Stagecoach's colours, which is red, orange, white and blue, as seen in my profile picture.

I’ve created a poll on this thread between Beachball, Local, Distance and Gold. I didn't include Stripes as that’d probably win.

It's also redundant When I was in the Aldershot area last Christmas/New Year, I noted most of Aldershot's Gold E400MMCs in use on the KITE - which reverts to its former service number, 20, from tomorrow - rather than on the 1, the route which they were bought for. These will probably gain the new local livery when they fall due for repaint.

Personally always thought the  stripes livery looked dull, dreary and dated. It had a habit of making vehicles look tatty and made newer vehicles look much older than they were, with the squareness of it not sitting well on vehicles with more curved/rounded features.

On the other hand, I always felt that  beachball sat well on both newer and older vehicles, making the latter appear smarter and more modern. The choice of colours also seemed to make the white sections always appear crisp, bright and clean.

The new local livery looks like they gave a toddler a colouring book and crayons and 30 seconds to design a new livery. Far too much plain white on show IMO.

How bizarre that I see the situation in the exact opposite way. Stripes was perfect for square modern buses but didn't look weird on older curved bodies, notably Routemasters and VRs, giving them in particular a smart fresh new look. Stripes just naturally highlighted the white somehow, the use of a small white gap between each stripe being a key but perhaps overlooked element.

I hated beachball the moment it was launched, by which time I think the fad for those kind of supposedly fresh new liveries that featured all manner of swirls and curls or other weirdness, and paid no real attention to the shape of individual models, had well and truly gone stale. Too much white on the sides, too much red on the rear, and who knows what going on at the front (which greatly depended on the model). Criminal to design a corporate livery that didn't mark your bus out to customers front the all important front.

Precisely because it was mostly white, stripes was a bit weird looking on models with lots of black plastic on them, typically foreign coaches, but they have thankfully been a rarity and seemed to have completely died out in the 90s. It would perhaps suffer on models with large continuous black glazing, such as the Solo in OPS profile pic. It would have also been a challenge to apply to Enviros and Wrights, due to the majorly curved lower fronts, so perhaps it was inevitable that the livery needed changing. But beachball? Yuck. Beachball is so horrid, it didn't even go up in my estimation in hindsight when Stagecoach revealed an even worse corporate scheme. Another one I have hated since day one, and will hate it forever too.

The stripes livery was certainly the most distinctive, but it also suffered from poor and inconsistent application. The one vehicle that suited it best was probably the Leyland National where the stripes could happily occupy the lower panels and there was plenty of space above the windows to apply the fleetname.

There were still a few Y-types around when Stagecoach took over my local company, and there was no consistency in how the livery was applied. The standard of finish also left a lot to be desired; we had a few Bristol VRs imported from the south that literally had paint peeling off, revealing their former colours.

Stripes may have made a good impression when it was freshly applied, but it looked bloody awful when it wasn't looked after properly.

I have two lovely wee models of buses in Stripes. I personally like it.

In the Local livery rebrand, they added new colours to their brand: Green, Light Blue & Orange/Yellow. Red no longer appears on the bus, although Beachball's whole rear was red.

IMHO Beachball worked for most bus types and a new livery wasn't needed. If it ain't broke...

Not to forget, there (or was) two versions of Beachball; the newer one, which can be seen in my current profile picture.
The older one had lots more blue at the front and orange stripes at the front. An example of Beachball "Old" is by searching "SN04EGF" on Flickr, a recently scrapped bus which stayed in the older version of Beachball.

Which do you prefer: Beachball "Old" or Beachball "New"?

I'm not too keen on the stripes either. It's easy to mis-measure and paint thicker or thinner stripes. The beachball made the Stagecoach brand more iconic than the preceding stripes. The dark blue skirt also smartly disguises dirt in the winter months, something that made the new liveried buses look awful.

The Gold branding initially looks smart, but seems to look cheap over time. The "long distance" variant of the new Stagecoach livery could've been a candidate for a replacement of the Gold colours.

Proper (old) beachball. The revised version just screamed of trying to save a few pennies IMO

Since Covid and the route being dropped from every 10 minutes, the excess vehicles have indeed spent a lot of time travelling. Certain journeys on the 18 to Bordon/Whitehill and 9 Alton town circular (which is interworked with several school/college runs) are other regular performers. The brand’s impact has been further lessened by 17 of the 18 branded vehicles (one is now a Poppy bus) continuing to prominently advertise the “every 10 mins mon-sat daytime” frequency which hasn’t been the case for over 3 years now. Tomorrow’s timetable change which sees a Saturday uplift from every 15 to every 12 means they could just change the ‘0’ for a ‘2’ to make the statement true again if ‘Gold’ wasn’t being done away with. I guess with the vehicles being five years old this year though, their paint cycle might be due soon so will probably just remain as-is. They did at least get around to covering the WiFi adverts with Contactless Payment ones though.

In terms of the more general Stagecoach identity as per this thread though, stripes will always have a sentimental value to me but original “Beachball” is without doubt my favourite iteration of the Stagecoach livery. I know when things change it’s common people poo-poo it but in time minds change and suddenly they love it when that becomes the old and is replaced by something else, but the new trio of schemes just aren’t growing on me at all.

Aldershot's Gold E400MMCs were due for a repaint last November (the cycle is around four years) but higher management are debating whether to repaint them in Local or Specialist livery - highly likely it would be the earlier.

The stripes ... suffered from inconsistent application.
How? They're using a ruler, surely?
The beachball made the Stagecoach brand more iconic than the preceding stripes.
Again, how? I can't think of a single bus livery that is similar to stripes. Beachball seems ways more generic. I definitely think a survey of the public would show which one is better at doing its job (identifying a Stagecoach bus)
The dark blue skirt also smartly disguises dirt in the winter months, something that made the new liveried buses look awful.
Perhaps, but I don't recall any obviously dirty striped buses, all things considered (people seem to understand that even with daily washing any colour of bus is going to look manky in wet conditions in the frosty months).

I have recently been struck however by the way the now quite old E400s are looking decidedly tatty due to the combination of dirt and old age seemingly quite easily washing out the colours on beachball, which are already a little dark.
The standard of finish also left a lot to be desired; we had a few Bristol VRs imported from the south that literally had paint peeling off, revealing their former colours.

Stripes ... looked bloody awful when it wasn't looked after properly.
Any livery will suffer if the bus isn't being well maintained, of which properly applying and caring for the paintwork is a key part. Hardly an issue of design.

I personally never saw a single striped bus in anything but perfect condition, in terms of all the stripes being the right size and with none of the paint peeling off. It added to the impression this was a bold new era.

Amazing considering how many very old buses with many defects and prior cycles through the paintshop it had to contend with.

By the time beachball arrived, it was surely fair to assume a corporate subsidiary could get the basics right, such as applying the livery as per the specification and in a way that sees the colors stay on the bus. Which seems to be the case.

Stripes was launched in a different era, with many an aquired subsidiary on its knees in terms of professionalism and pride, with much resistance to change where local practices were embedded. In that light, perfect uniformity was a big ask. It was also the pre-digital age.
