Some traffic management measures are supposed to make things easier. According to Fife Council, replacing the 4 way small roundabout at Weymssfield in Kirkcaldy, just north of the town centre, with four sets of traffic lights, and widening the pavements, would make things better.

Has it? Of course not. Regular queues have built up, rat runs are being taken along narrow nearby streets, and now even bus drivers are complaining, as it seems are Stagecoach, at the delays.

The delays are sometimes as much as five minutes. The most incredible bit is that some cars are taking a short cut through a petrol station forecourt, to miss the lights, thus risking an accident and possible explosion.

Fife council says the lights are working, and delays are about a minute. On a 10 minute observation I made on Monday afternoon, about 3pm, I have to say, their definiation of a minute is more than 60 seconds.

And one last point. By widening the footpaths, to make things better for the pedestrians, and to encourage people to use public transport, Stagecoach are saying their buses are now struggling to turn right from Weymssfield into St Brycedale Avenue, en route to leven or route X26 and X60. This is due to the stop line on St Brycedale Avenue being so close to the crossroads, causing more delays, as the coach needs time to make the turn, and also resulting in cars on St Brycedale avenue sometimes unable to go at green, as the coach is still trying to reverse and go forwrd to turn.

Good thinking by Fife Council . I should add, when the roundabouts and wider roads were there, such delays were non existent.

With the new labour council in control there might just find some money to bring back the mini roundabout..

I totally agree with the views on the Wemyssfield situation in Kirkcaldy. There was nothing wrong with the roundabout and traffic flowed freely. When the lights first came into operation it caused chaos and the the system had to be very swiftly changed so that traffic coming from only one quarter of the crossroads can go at one time. This means you have to sit and wait for 3 sets of traffic to go before you get the green light again. The whole escapade was a complete waste of time and money and who can blame motorists for wanting to avoid it? It seems the affair has been extremely ill thought out and badly implemented. But of course Fife Council won't admit this.

One morning the lights were out and there were no queues of traffic in any direction. Everyone just treated the junction as the roundabout it once was and traffic flowed freely. I fear that a similar situation will occur in Dunfermline with the roadworks that are currently happening outside the bus station. At the moment it seems to be easier/quicker when entering the bus station from a westerly direction. You do not have to wait for the right filter arrow. But there seems to be far longer queues for buses passing Debenhams then turning left into the bus station. Buses are experiencing significant delays, especially between 1500 and 1800. Time will tell if things improve after the works have finished.

Glenrothes services 35/36/265/365 are all interworked, and are booked for 3 B7TLs and 1 B10M.

Not sure exactly what the B10M works, but I'd suggest that its likely that service 36 would be a low floor B7TL.

Might be worth asking Stagecoach directly though.

I like the way that Stagecoach highlight these things in their timetable (since not everything can be low floor on every route just yet) - positive stuff

Very few stagecoach operations do this I'm told. But yes, it's good. Of course, over the next few years, such non low floor worknigs will get rarer.

Agreed.

As someone who often takes a pushchair/pram on a bus it's important to know these things in advance where possible (though, of course, there can be no guarantees - it's a nice touch from the operator though that means a great deal)

In Perth and Kinross, school route 892 passes on 29/05/2012 from Aberfeldy Motor Services to Stagecoach. Perth depot will operate. Apparently, AMS could no longer provide cover for it.

On another interesting note, two Tridents at Arbroath are transferring to Glenrothes, with two of that depots 60 reg Enviro 400s heading the opposite way.

And the Volvo B7TL which has been away in Newcastle for a cummins engine (I am not kidding!) is returning home. No idea which depot it'll go to, but Glenrothes is lkely.

What's so surprising that a B7TL has been away at Smiles for a Cummins lump? It needed a new engine, Smiles/Cummins keen to show off their re-engineering & upgrade program for the vast majority of buses, so why not?
I expect it now has a ncie euro 5 Cummins lump which is more normal across Stagecoach fleets. Quite a few MAN ALX300s have been similarly treated.

I still don't see that its any different from the MANs that were sent away for the same treatment....

No, several MANs were sent away for a new Cummins engine. The radiator/cooling layout is different on the new engine, hence the extra grilles.

22252 and 22268 (the alpha and omega of the first batch of MAN 18.220s new to Stagecoach Fife, in 1999) have a large grille on the rear engine cover, as mentioned by mbonwick. Think I have a photo somewhere.

Volvo Olympian 16098 (now at Rennies) has a Cummins engine, and has had so for many years.

Yeah, 16098 has the mechanicals of a Trident in it. Not sure why that is - was it a failure in London (who fitted the units) and easier to replace with Trident parts? Was it a training exercise or feasability study?

Something that our fleetlist guru, mbonwick, will enjoy. Going through some files the other day, I came across a Stagecoach Fife fleetlist from 18 September 1995, and it makes interesting reading comparing it with a 2012 east scotland version.

There were 6 depots (Kirkcaldy closed 2004) and two outstations (Newburgh (still open), linked to Glenrothes, and Cupar (now closed) linked to St. Andrews), and Rennies was still an independent firm at this time.

National fleetnumbers were still seven years away, and indeed most of the vehicles in the fleet at the time did gain national fleetnumbers. So, for the purposes of this, I'll use the local fleetnumbers. Each depot had the following allocations in total

Aberhill: 8 minibuses; 15 single deckers (Express coaches were treated as single deckers at the time), 3 touring coaches, and 32 double deckers, total fleet 58

Cowdenbeath: 3 minis, 31 singles, 19 doubles, total 53

Dunfermline: 12 midi, 35 singles, 16 doubles, total 63

Glenrothes (including Newburgh): 15 mini, 21 single, 17 double, total 53

Kirkcaldy: 4 mini, 15 midi, 30 single, 21 double, total 70

St. Andrews (including Cupar): 5 mini, 8 single, 9 double, 2 open tops, total 24.

the fleet at the time was also interesting for its content. It was numbered with minibuses, then single deckers, then midibuses, and double deckers last. The 35 strong minibus fleet comprised 13 MCW Metroriders, which were all at Glenrothes, and 22 mercedes minibuses, mainly 709D, but there was also a 608D and an 811D as well.

27 Midibuses were divided between Dunfermline (12 Volvo B6's), and Kirkcaldy (10 Volvo B6s' and 5 Darts). It's worth noting that Kirkcaldy's B6's, with the exception of 659, were all transfers in from either United Counties (623-8) or Ribble (667-9). 659 was also the only dual purpose seated midibus in the Fife fleet.

The single deck fleet was even more varied. This was 140 strong, and of course included the express coaches. 56 Leyland Leopards still existed at this time. 25 of them had bus seating, with the Y type body, though Cowdenbeath didn't have any bus seated examples. The dual purpose examples were either coach bodied Leopards, subsequently downgraded to bus work, or in the case of 261-9 (CSF 161-9W), Y type examples which had their bus seats removed, and replaced with dual purpose seats. Leopards 180-9 (PSX180-9) were also notable in lacking overhead luggage racks.

The Stagecoach standard Volvo B10M/Alexander PS totalled 18 examples, 301-10, which were new in 1994, and 311-8, new in 1995 (319-29 arrived in the autumn of that year, ousting the last nationals). The national fleet was down to just 10 examples, three at Aberhill, seven at Cowdenbeath. All were of mark 2 type. The leyland tiger fleet was much more varied. 13 bus seated examples, delivered in 1986, with 6 seats, were based at Cowdenbeath (2), Dunfermline (7), Glenrothes (1), and St. Andrews (3), whilst 13 dual purpose seated examples also existed. Most were former express coaches, downgraded, though the 466-70 (MNS 6-10Y) batch came from Highland Scottish. Kirkcaldy was the only depot not to have Leyland Tigers, the last examples ousted by 316-8. The Tiger touring coach, and both B10M tourers were at Aberhill.

The 30 strong Plaxton bodied express coach fleet was based at Aberhill, Glenrothes, Dunfermlnie, and Kirkcaldy. Two of these, from the 1995 batch, survive in Fife as driver trainers.

Going onto double deckers, 17 Leyland Olympians existed, 15 new in 1992, short wheelbase, 10 at Dunfermline, five at Kirkcaldy, supplemented by two ex east Midland long wheelbase versions, both at Kirkcaldy.

37 Volvo Ailsas remained at this time, at all depots except Dunfermline. The largets allocation was at Glenrothes, with 11, the smallest Cowdenbeath, with just 2. 37 Volvo Citybuses were on fleet, 15 were dual purpose, 14 of which were at Aberhill (920 was based at St. Andrews), while with the bus seated examples, all depots except Aberhill had an allocation. Ex demo 908 (B108 CCS) was later reseated to bus seating. Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy each had 6, Cowdenbeath 3, Glenrothes 5, and St. Andrews just 2 examples. Both open tops, a Bristol VR and an Atlantean, were based at St. Andrews.

21 Bristol VRs were on fleet, for use mainly on school contracts given up by Moffat and Williamson the year before. They were numbered 1110-29, and so fleetnumbers didn't match registrations. 1110-6 were at Aberhill, the others at Cowdenbeath. Most had ECW bodies, though four at Cowdenbeath had Willowbrook bodies. Lastly, three Atlanteans were on fleet, 1136 (LEO 736Y) was at Aberhill, and came from Ribble, but was notable as being the last ex Barrow vehicle owned by Ribble. 1144 and 1161 (SCN 244/61S) were ex Busways, and 1157 also arrived shortly afterwards.

So there you go, quite a change in 17 years, in more ways than one. Be interesting to see if anyone has a fleetlist from the immediate pre stagecoach period, say 1990.

Strangely only another 13 PS appeared two years later, Taking the total to about 43:
It took three years to get rid of the All the T and Y types out of the fleet (1999), CSF 161-9W were really down on there heels by the end. GSO81-4V also appeared in the fleet around about this time, Very smart!

5 of the DP Citybuses were not from fife, 2 from Western with newer body and 3 with Northern counties and ZF gears? from Southern.

Plaxton bodied express coach K reg Batch soon disappeared within two years with N and R regs examples. In 1999 just as the bus war took off 20 Alx300 for Cowdenbeath appeared and 6 Dennis darts for Dunfermline

The two citybuses from Western came in 1999, numbered 965/7. Prior to this, 909 and 910 were diverted from a Western order in 1987. The three NC bodied Citybuses, 940-2, came up in 1992.

As I just went to Edinburgh for the weekend, I concentrated on Lothian Buses and rail developments on Saturday 26th May, and met friends on Sunday. I was impressed by the leather-seated buses on routes 55 and X59 and shall ride these next time I am in the area.

The olympic torch relay passes through east scotland country next week, and stagecoach east scotland have advised of timings, and routes to be affected. The most severe disruption will be in Dunfermline, although some major disruption is also expected in St andrews

I recall reading somewhere that 16098 was sent away for "engine experimentation" back in its London days. It is one of the best Olympians I have driven, along with 16646.

Great fun reading Robert's post re 1995 fleet lists. Brought back some good memories!

Couple of odd workings I saw circa 07:00 on Fri last. A scania omnilink tri axle doing a X27 working seen at the Victoria Hospital, and an Enviro 400 going through Out of service, but reading "Excursion" on its screen. Hmm.

Thats normal, The two X27 runs at 06.20 and 07.07 do use Scania as when there arr in Kirkcaldy both go on to the X57 at 07.00 and 07.47, instead of dead running's .

I'm surprised there dont do the same when the X57 come back in the evening, especial with all the complaints around Vic Hospital.
