In Portsmouth stagecoach are running a full Sunday service on Boxing Day. Supposedly the drivers are up in arms about it, and drivers will only be getting flat rate for it.

Is there a similar picture of this across the country?

I believe Stagecoach in East Scotland will have boxing day services, I think the Perth ones are paid for by the council. Fife its a reduced Sunday service, which are paid for by the council with triple rate per hour.

26th December this year isn't a bank holiday because it falls on a Saturday, the bank holiday is given on Monday 28th December instead. This means 26th December is a normal operational Saturday but operators can run a reduced (Sunday/BH) service if they notified the authorities of their intention.

Operators can (other than on tendered routes) run or not run whatever they like on any day they wish, Bank Holiday or otherwise, provided it has been notified to the Traffic Commissioner 56 days in advance.

Surprised there's nothing at all from Plymouth C B, surely there's enough demand nowadays.

As mentioned above, the bank holiday for xmas is on 28th December, as Boxing day falls on a Saturday, and you can't have bank holidays at weekends, as Banks are shut!

Worth mentioning that Stagecoach East Scotland timetables state that a reduced service runs on certain dates around Christmas and new year, with no service on 25th December and 1st January.

Stagecoach Merseyside have a special service based on the Sunday service[although some routes are not operating] between 10am & 5-8pm however frequencies will be every 30 or 60 minutes rather than the usual Sunday frequencies.

If this is true, I imagine that there will be a considerable of services planned to run that don't. It's likely that some drivers will take the most direct option to show their resentment and just not turn up for work. That is certainly what I would expect to happen if I was involved in it.

Does that mean this 26th will be St Stephens Day?

In pervious years they have run a severely reduced service on Boxing Day, the fact they're running a full Sunday service for the entirety of the day with no drivers enhancements is what shocks me. My employer are running a limited half hourly service on 4 routes from 8-6

In Stagecoach South East land, special Boxing Day services are running on:

- Canterbury Triangle (routes 4 and 6)
- Breeze (route 8)
- Gold route 16
- the Thanet Loop

The first three in the above list are new this year.

Been a full Sunday service in London for a while now, with shops now opening on Boxing Day I guess this will become the norm?

When people are talking about Boxing day are they talking about Saturday 26th or Monday 28th?

Oh and Scotland doesn't count because their Bank Holidays over Christmas/New Year are different to England and Wales!

No, its ALL the other bank holidays outside Christmas/New Year which are different to England and Wales.

Scotland has:
25/26 or the following Monday if this falls on a weekend Just like England and wales
1/2 or the following Monday if this falls on a weekend.

I will never understand why the English don't want the 2nd of January off aswell .

In Hull its last services by 8pm on Christmas Eve, no service Christmas Day and a limited Sunday service Boxing Day

Thats by both EYMS and Stagecoach - I prefer EYMS as their drivers are better, safer and the friendliest drivers you could hope to meet. When they retired their step entrance buses, they put on a farewell tour of the local area and asked for suggestions from passengers and enthusiasts.

We prefer religious observance and celebrating the resurrection than getting hammered......

In the North East, there are differing approaches. Stagecoach North East operate some Boxing Day routes in Tyne and Wear but not Teesside or Hangerpool. Arriva North East operate nothing. Go North East operate quite extensively so places like Durham will get a service but only because of GNE.

In a way, I'm rather sad that Boxing Day is now regarded as "just another day". Why not have just two days when people can rest; they can go shopping for another 362 days a year (in England and Wales).

I prefer the getting hammered

Last time I did that, I woke 36 hours later with a traffic cone, policeman's hat, suspenders and the headrest cover from a GNER first class seat
