Stage 7 signalling renewals Birmingham.

In the weekly ops notices, there's mention of some works at New St station in connection with stage 7 of the resignalling. Now IIRC this is the biggie, taking control of the station area signalling. Thought this wasn't starting for a while, so I presume that it's either the early steps for the future renewal , or its actually happening. Anyone know anything concrete?

Scheme is designed with Xmas 2021 for the switch over, I expect it will be treated like the refurb of New St with a platform out at a time.

Is there much changing in the track layout? I got the impression it wasn't possible to change much in the station throats due to lack of space.

Presume they've got some derogation for the short overlaps.

Like for like, exit speeds up to 15mph and a few other bits and bobs, nothing very exciting.

Exit speeds up to 15mph is exciting though; it’s a 50% increase in speed, which means a 33% reduction in journey time for exiting the throat. Worth half a minute.

Ain't the exit speeds currently 5mph? or is that just the entry speeds?

10mph all round. It could barely function at 5mph.

15mph is a damn sight more exciting than 10 as already said!! Come in the cab at New St and you'd appreciate what a ballache it is now doing 10 Surely with an extensive fitment of TPWS you could even achieve 20?? I know the overlaps are small but with a 10mph limit on the OSS grids like at terminal stations where your overlap is a set of buffers, it could be done?

OSS grids on terminal bufferstops are generally set at 12.5mph now when resignalled.

Besides, some of the pway New St is only fit for 15mph because of the alignment of the pointwork.

Ahh apologies, it just feels like it when going in or out of the place so yes I can see 15mph being a big improvement.

Depends if a) we don't get all conservative and leave the SRTs alone and b) we can utilise the ½ minute! Yes it helps the station work better and I expect it has been quantified to some extent. The other enhancement is a bit of bi-di up to Monument Lane so you can send a unit up to hide for a while, though finding a gap for that during the day will be tricky.

I think it will probably be more of a question of improving timekeeping, or increasing the amount of slack in the timetable. Half a minute saved on each entry and exit into a major station like New Street is a surprisingly significant improvement.

Wonder if this has anything to do with the introduction of the new TDEUs (Train Dispatch Equipment Units) around the station - such as that now (iirc) in use on platform 4c. Hadn't a clue what it was a few months ago when it appeared bagged up until I asked on the Signalling Facebook group!!

What are they? Any photos of one? I do know what the CD/RA panels look like but never heard of a TDEU.
