Hello, I was recommended to check out this forum from a kind soul on Reddit. I regularly travel to Euston during peak times from Stafford. I wonder if there were any nifty little hacks to reduce the fare? I am a novice so I just get them far in advance and use split save where I can!

Welcome!

Are you eligible for a railcard (saves 1/3) eg aged between 16-30 or 60+ / disabled / able to travel back together with a colleague in the afternoon?

Would you be happy with slower trains which are cheaper, eg LNR semi fast / the slower route via Birmingham then using Chiltern?

Do you work in education (low fixed fares with Avanti)? Are you a member of any cashback or reward schemes? One of the best (at the moment) is Uber travel which offers 10% back in credit.

@sweetpickleyog. Welcome to the forum. How frequently are you intending on travelling between Stafford and Euston? Daily? Weekly? Less often?

Will these all be day return journeys, or are you maybe overnighting in London? What time do you have to be in London for? And will any of the journeys be on Fridays?

If the OP doesn't mind using LNWR only, trains take 1 hour 50 to 2 hours, LNWR only anytime return is £130, but off peak return is £51, first off peak train is 08.32 to Euston, however i think their is no afternoon peak restrictions using LNWR only ticket returning from Euston

The first LNWR train to Euston is 05.33

The 7 day season on LNR is £209, so if your doing more than one day a week that will beat anytime returns.
If OP is traveling to London for longer than a week, then LNWR monthly season is £802.60, with the annual one at £8.360.

All season ticket options beat paying £130 anytime return everytime the OP travels,(that's if the OP needs to travel before 08.30), even if the OP is traveling twice or 3 times a week.

Thank you! I vary between London north western and Avanti, depending on how much I want to sit on a slower train / if I’m purchasing early enough in advance to get the Avanti trains on the cheap! I have a rail card but I’m travelling down day one, and returning day two. I like the idea of uber cash back, thank you very much!

What sort of Railcard do you have?

So it's one return journey a week. Outward journey day one and returning day two. Do you know what days of the week and roughly what times this will be?

I am afraid you need to provide answers to the questions to get the best advise here.

Does this mean that you are happy to book fixed trains? Or do you need the flexibility of a ticket where you can choose which train to take?

Using Ticket split STA To EUS is 71.6 for Avanti 0556, 0622. Flexible, railcard would be cheaper. Return by LNWR £39 off peak without raicard
