Anyone know whats been going on at Stafford? Seen an air ambulance so would assume some accident.

Twitter is full of posts talking about delays and air ambulance but I've not seen one say why.

National Rail Enquiries is particularly unhelpful, referring only to "emegency services are dealing with an incident". Do they think people will faint, en masse, if we are told what's going on?

All trains through Stafford this morning have been delayed after an incident on the tracks close to the Salop sidings behind the Tesco superstore. The air ambulance was called to Stafford Station in response to the incident which is thought to involve a railway track worker apparently injured by overhead power lines while working on the track this morning. Passengers were informed initially the power had been switched off due to a trespassing incident on the railway just south of Stafford Station. Information coming into Stafford FM this morning says a ‘staff incident’ had taken place at Stafford and the Staffordshire Air Ambulance is in attendance. More news on this as to follow.

Update: 9:43am. Power has now been restored to the railway at Stafford and trains are now moving again.

The air ambulance was just taking off from Tesco car park as I walked through on my way to the station. The car parks about 100 metres away from the station.

The message we were given from control was that there was overhead wire problems in the Stafford area but no more info than that was given.
The wires would obviously be isolated if an air ambulance was around the line so that was obviously the reaction not the cause of the problems, strange.

Probably because the reopen time was known,had it been longer I agree divert at Kidsgrove.

BBC's website here is reporting that a track worker has been involved suffering serious burns:

A rail worker has suffered "serious" burns while working alongside the track in Stafford.

The air ambulance was called to the station at about 08:30 GMT, prompting the overhead power lines to be turned off delaying several services.

Network Rail said it was not yet clear what had happened.

The power was restored at about 09:30 and passengers face delays of about an hour, London Midland said.

Hope the rail worker is ok.

The air ambulance was called to Stafford railway station at about 08:30 GMT, prompting the overhead power lines to be turned off.

The power was restored at about 09:30 and passengers faced delays of about an hour before services returned to normal at about 11:30.

The man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Network Rail said it was not yet clear what had happened.

'Extensive burns'
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch will investigate the incident.

It is not yet known who the man is employed by, a Network Rail spokesman said.

"[He] was working line-side, not on the station, but by the track, when it happened," the spokesman said.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "A man in his 20s had suffered extensive burns which were treated at the scene.

"He was also given pain relief before being taken by land ambulance to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham."

Interestingly, Network Rail don't know who the worker's employer is...is that because more than one company might be operating in the area or that Network Rail have no idea who might be working on the tracks?

No more likely it was a holding statement put out and those in the know are rather busy ensuring it the facts around the case than informing the press of every detail.
