Its now 23 years since the 22.18 Manchester to Penzance service was involved in a derailment at Stafford on Aug 4th 1990, so I just wondered does anyone have more information on this. Ive always wondered what happened to passengers on this train already and how did they make their connections into the South West at such a late time at night or did they have to wait six hours at Stafford for the next trains in to Birmingham?

One thing I noticed it was 23:36 empty coaching from stoke smashed into the back of the train so I guess this would happen at around 23:57 which explains the Penzance train must have been delayed already as it was usually timetabled for its Stafford stop at about 23:25. So also wondered what this delay was caused by?

Well considering 36 people were injured, I guess a good number of passengers made their way to the hospital rather than the next connecting service...

I imagine the remaining passengers were taxied or bused to the destination.

EDIT: On the delay, according to the accident report:
26 The departure of 1V27 from Stafford was delayed because the buffet steward sought assistance from the station staff and the senior conductor of his train to deal with some unruly passengers. Thus, although station duties had been completed and the signal for the train to leave Stafford was showing a green aspect, 1V27 stood in Plaiform 4 at Stafford for some minutes.

29 Mr HA Robens, who was the driver of train 1V27. told me that the train was one hour late starting from Manchester due to difficulties in the provision of a locomotive

As an asside to the above, I have vague memories of a less serious TPO/parcels derailment just to the south of Stafford in more recent years. Can anyone enlighten/refresh my mind on the circumstances of that one?

anyone got any info on a derailment around early 1990's around Bristol Parkway? Im sure my train was once cancelled due to a freight derailment in the Bristol Parkway area.
