Freight drivers travelling pass will be asked for assistance by passengers fairly often. I always tried my best to help but frequently I would be in a location where I knew as much (or as little) as the passenger asking the question.

With regard to taking breaks (PNB's) on a train. Freight drivers are often booked to take a break on passenger services, and yes, on occasion they may fall asleep, especially if they've been up all night driving.

...an often heard quote from past times - " This would be a lovely job if it wasn't for the passnegers". Are freight drivers happier folk than their passenger counterparts ?

Nothing can beat the feeling of being on the footplate of a loco, looking out of the window at 400 yards (and more) of wagons whilst belting along at 60mph.

Its not quite the same driving a 4 car DMU in my opinion. Hours are better on passenger work though.

This is precisely why I don’t mourn the loss of BR, or indeed a railway network under state ownership. Back in the days of BR customer service was shoddy to say the least. It is undoubtedly much better now.

Of course. But you have to look back & chuckle. I remember a local papers campaign that wheelchair passengers shouldnt have to travel in the brake van with a blanket provided. Staff couldnt see what all the fuss was about at the time
