St Pancras underground

As St P is a new station why wasn't the area between platforms opened out to a 'hall' style? Currently, at rush hour, there are so many people waiting for the train that it makes it difficult for people to get off the train. Do any LU stations have a hall style platform area?

My guess as to why it wasnt done is that it would be a very big and complicated job, afterall the bit in the middle supports the roof above.

Which platforms do you mean?
The new underground platforms which are used by the FCC Bedford-Brighton trains were built in this style.
The platforms for the Circle and Metropolitan lines are not new. They are part of the world's oldest underground railway line - Paddington to Farringdon Street.

As my original header said - "underground". As the FCC are main line on platforms underneath the main station they're not "underground" in my sense of the word!

I wasn't aware there was an underground station there already not having used St P before last year. Thought everything but the main station structure was new.
Still don't understand why the LU platforms couldn't have been made bigger/wider. Surely the technology exists and if you're going to rebuild the station from the ground up why not also do it from the ground down?

the problem there is that LUL is an old network, and back then they didnt know that it would ba as popular as it is today, so didnt think that they would need space for all the extra capacity that is used today

The sub-surface lines LU station is under Euston road. That section of railway was originally built by digging up the street above. It's not very far underneath said street. I'd imagine that any works to hollow out the existing design of station would rather require the closure of the road... this can't happen.

Simply put: It would cost a fortune and hardly provide value for money.

If you do want to see Underground stations with "Hall" type platforms, then the Jubilee line extension, especially Canary Wharf, is worth a visit. Some lovely architecture.
