St Pancras to Brighton

I'm planning to travel tomorrow from St Pancras to Brighton. Does anyone know if St Pancras and/or Brighton have ticket barriers? I'll be making a quick change from Kings Cross and ideally would like to buy the ticket on the train, is this possible with First Capital Connect?

Both St Pancras and Brighton have barriers (albeit St Pancras only has barriers for FCC services). Tickets for travel with FCC must be bought before travel as per their penalty fares rules.

Judging from your post you are travelling into King's Cross by another train. If you haven't got a through ticket I'd suggest buying one from the station you start from (the one where you are travelling to King's Cross from).

thanks, i thought as much. actually getting a Grand Central ticket from York to Kings Cross. Can't seem to find through fares for Grand Central unless it's changed

Ah - the Any Permitted is available but is much more expensive! If you arrive at York in plenty of time you'll be able to buy a St Pancras to Brighton ticket there before travelling into London .

FCC Thameslink (and most if not all Great Northern?) services are driver only operated, so you won't be seeing a guard to buy a ticket from anyway. Might see some RPIs though...

Also, what time are you travelling? Nothing leaves STP for Brighton after 22:30 Mon-Fri, because of the Thameslinnk blockade

going from peterborough-Brighton on the 17th-is this ticket valid for the tube journey from LKX-Victoria? Website isn't bringing up any interchange for FCC-Brighton at LKX.

There's no interchange on that date because of the Thameslink programme blockade. Not sure about Tube to Vic but it will be accepted on the Tube to London Bridge, which is where the FCC journeys start from

The Peterborough to Brighton "walk up" tickets are routed "+Any Permitted", indicating that they are valid for cross London transfers using the London Underground.

True. But if it's an FCC only ticket, then it will only be accepted to LB, not Vic. If it's AP, then it's no problem.

There are no FCC only tickets for through journeys from the Great Northern route to the southern part of the Thameslink route. For cheaper FCC only tickets you'd need to split tickets in London. If doing a day return there are substantial savings to be made doing this.

yes you can use the tube from KGX to VIC (LKX doesn't exist).

All of STP has ticket barries as such, but the MML & Bedford services from 1-4 are manned ticket barriers

Whenever I travel on EMT, they check on board heading south but heading north they just rely on the barrier check at St Pancras.

I have been checked both ways, though saying that more so when heading towards London.

I've been checked both ways multiple times, however several times using services that get into London about 10pm they don't usually check tickets.

When the blockade was weekends only, they were using P.4 but since the full blockade, including evenings and more frequent weekend trains, has been in place they've decided to use P.1 as it offers more flexibilty (apparently).
So, unless there are unforeseen circumstances, FCC will use P.1 between 222:30 and 04:30 Mon-Fri and all weekend.

To be honest as a regular traveller from South of London to Kings Cross I wouldn't recommend FCC unless the Victoria line is closed. The journey is now always quicker by tube.
When St Pancras International first opened I used FCC quite a bit but now the novelty of the new station has worn off the reality is that the tube and a Southern service from Victoria is always more convenient and comfortable.
I'm not sure if its the distance or the pedestrian flows but Kings Cross to St Pancras International Low level seems to take about 5 mins longer than Kings Cross to Kings Cross Thameslink used to take. There also seems to be a fairly lengthy pathing allowance at Blackfriars these days on Brighton services.
Of course once you get to Victoria you get a comfy 377 with air conditioning, 2 +2 seating and trolley buffet on many services compared with noisy and often pretty dirty 319s with uncomfortable 3+2 seating on FCC.
