St Pancras Thameslink new Tunnel?

Noticed a new tunnel the left when departing St Pancras heading towards Bedford. Don't think it was the tunnel heading to Finsbury Park, it was illuminated with lights and only had one track. Would anyone have any idea where it leads to?

The tunnel to Finsbury Park is actually two single track tunnels, it would have been the Southbound one that you saw, the Northbound one is shorter and farther away from the MML.

Assuming VC00 was heading north from St Pancras low level then heading off to the left is the northbound tunnel towards Finsbury Park (the track dives under the traditional Thameslink route). The corresponding southbound tunnel may have been visible on the right at a similar point, but of course it is hard to look two ways at once!

Exactly so. Though you cant as easily see it due to the lights not being on, you can just about make out the junction and canal tunnels in this video leaving St Pancras Thameslink:

Another video here, from about 2 min 45 secs onwards a train leaves for the ECML via the down canal tunnel. (C on the route indicator.). If you watch until the tail lights are about to disappear in the distance you can see the route is descending to turn right and pass under the original route to Kentish Town.

Yes the lights were on in both of the Canal Tunnels tonight.

Don't think I've ever seen the lights on them before. Do they run on some sort of timetable or just for admin purposes?

Thameslink does run to a timetable but, as you say, it seems to be largely for admin purposes

Used for engineering/inspections I believe.
