I've just been looking at some pics of St Enoch station, Glasgow on the railscot website. A few of them are of empty carriages being brought into the station but where exactly was the depot - I've been trying to follow the line out from the former station site on Google Earth but not the easiest thing to do with the passage of time. I used the station a couple of times after it closed & was being used as a car park - what a waste of a fine building.

Lovely picture; not seen an aerial view of the old Glasgow layout before. Now I can place the site of the old station exactly in my mind - it's where that ghastly big harsh looking roof over a shopping centre is now isn't it?

Couple of questions:

1) What's the two works in the top right of the picture?

2) Just outside the front of St Enoch station - is that small square blob in the middle of the road the "Little Castle" station building on the subway?

1) High Street Goods Yard (north) and College Goods Yard (south).

2) Yes.

The engine shed was inside the triangle immediately east of the station. There used to be carriage sidings at Bellahouston, near the present Shields depot.

Despite traveling frequently on the G&SWR line to Carlisle in the 1969/70 period I cannot recall passing them but obviously must have. I do however recall the train I used was a Glasgow to Leeds service which used to have an old LNER catering coach in it & despite what was claimed on another thread here recently was hauled by a Peak loco.

Assuming your route was Glasgow Central - Kilmarnock - Dumfries - Carlisle, then no, you wouldn't have passed them.

I finally located it on Google Earth between Shields depot & Dumbreck station - not that there's much left to see.

I'm with you there - the Leeds - Glasgow morning service and return evening service were usually Peak hauled throughout. That LNER buffet still ran in this service in the mid 70s. The Thames Clyde was Peak hauled to/from Glasgow too until it was diverted from the GSWR to the Beattock route soon after electrification and changed engines in Carlisle.

from memory the Glasgow - Nottingham/St Pancras sleeper also contained pre grouping stock in the 70s - LMS sleepers which I think may also have had 6 wheeled bogies but I'm not sure on that. Again Peak hauled through to Glasgow on the GSWR. Some steamy journeys back on that to Carlisle from visiting relatives in Kilmarnock!

I to remember the sleepers having travelled on them occasionaly from Dumfries, although cannot remember the terminating point. If memory serves correct I can confirm that there were 2 LMS sleepers which were normally coupled together.

Can anyone confirm the terminating point I wonder?

Looking at that map answers questions but raises more. What was the original route of the St Enoch to Edinburgh services which I presume went originally to Edinburgh Princes Street station. One of the pictures I saw was of a class 126 dmu which after the closure of Princes Street station must have gone to Edinburgh Waverley - did any of these use what is now the reopened Airdrie to Bathgate line.

Just think if they had kept St Enochs instead of Central... they could probably have done away with Queen St as well and had all services from one station. Would have meant the loss of Cowlairs but then I suppose that won't have bothered them too much!!

It's a complicated history, and of course I can't lay my hands on the relevant book...

St Enoch's was the Glasgow and South Western terminus, and as far as I know its services normally ran out across the Clyde, into southwest Scotland, with many of them turning 180 degrees towards their destination along the Clyde coast! I have not previously heard of regular services running to Edinburgh, though specials may have done so. There was no easy link eastwards onto the former Caledonian lines (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Glasgow_RJD_29.jpg ) In any case, the Caledonian was always zealous in discouraging intruders from south of the Airdrie-Bathgate route!

The triangle at the St Enoch throat was most handy, I have read, for turning locos!

The 1955/56 WTT shows no booked passenger services between St. Enoch and the lines towards the east / north. A few "Class C" trains (parcels, e.c.s., milk, etc.) used the east curve at St. Enoch.

I now see where my error occurred. During my search for St Enoch pictures one had a dmu & a steam engine labelled as forming a service to Edinburgh. I took it to indicate a regular dmu service rather than a one off steam charter train. Idiot that I am.
