Assuming you want a Standard Class return, St Albans City (SAC) to Shepherds Bush (SPB) is £15 Anytime, or £10 Off Peak changing at West Hampstead. If you want to go via London then that costs £4.90 and £3 extra, respectively.
Avantix won't show any fares from St Albans Abbey (SAA) to SPB, but the fare from nearby Park Street, changing at Watford Junction (avoiding London) is £13.50 Anytime, or £10 Off Peak.

I think you could buy a ticket for SAA - park street on board (the Abbey Line sells all tickets on board) but you would probably have to pay quite a lot for one stop. Can you get a fare from Watford?

Yes you can, but you're probably better off with a ticket to Kensington Olympia (KPA).

It's clearly an anomaly. When the new station came into existence I think someone forgot about SAA. I think that SAA and SAC should both be part of a new St Albans Stations group. It exists for Southend, Pontefract, Bradford, Hertford and many others... why on earth not for St Albans?

Thetrainline won't have it via Watford, but that's crap (Yes I know Thetrainline staff read this site, and they still don't sort the problems! Unbelievable) and certainly not authoritative.

Which is Euston and St pancras as far as St Albans is concerned.
Depending on why you're going and how long you'll be in Shepherds Bush, You could always get a London Travelcard which is £14.50 off peak from St Albans, travel to Shepherds Bush and when you've finished there have a mosey around West London.

An Off Peak Day return from St Albans Abbey to Willesden Jn is £8.30.so london terminals can take me through to willesden junction and then its just oyster from there to shepherds bush?

Oyster can be used from Watford or anywhere south of Watford including Harrow, Willesden, or wherever, to Shepherds Bush.
Combining a paper ticket and Oyster may be cheaper than a through paper ticket but it is unlikely.

around the same time i asked this question on the forum, i also asked first capital connect customer services for their understanding of the situation with st albans and st albans abbey. they have just replied and seem to disagree with what's been said on the forum. who is right?

If the destination is London Terminals they are valid for travel to all stations up to and including St Pancras on the Thameslink route. They are not valid on any other route including London Underground or to Shepherds Bush. Should you wish to travel on the Underground you would be required to purchase a ticket valid for this purpose such as an all zones Travelcard which includes all underground travel within zones 1-6.
