I'm flying from Gatwick at stupid o'clock on Thursday and returning same day.

I'm trying to look up the best fares for what will be St Albans City to Gatwick.

One thing I looked up was getting a return from Gatwick to St Albans off peak return, annual gold card - £16.95

I won't use the outbound ticket but will use the return on the 3rd, as I need to get a train between 0230 and 0400.. so it still counts as travel from the day before.

Then to come back, it seems like an annual gold card single is £13.85 - for a total of £30.80.

That still seems expensive so I wonder if there's a more clever way to split? I will always be using Thameslink (I hope the trains will be running!), so no need to use GatEx or Southern even if I could.

Getting an anytime return is obviously easier, but another fiver or so as I can't get a discount on that.

You can get a Gold Card discount on an Anytime Return although you need to be careful not to fall foul of the 0930 position.

I went with an anytime day single, discounted, ticket for today (usable until 0429) and the same for coming back tomorrow.
