Srtarting a new career as a driver

Hi all

Ive wanted to change my career for a while now (CCTV control room operator) and i want to fulfil my dream job which would be a train driver. Does anyone know where i can start to look and offer advise of course I'm starting from the bottom and have no knowledge whatsoever.
I'm from Manchester area if that helps if anyone knows anywhere offering training courses.

Do some research into the role first and if you are still interested then apply ensuring you have the correct attributes for the role. Why would your dream job be a train driver - that's the best place to start.

The only places you will find training courses to be a train driver are the TOCs. When they need trainee drivers they will advertise the job. You apply to them and they provide the training. You can't train as a train driver at some training Center off your own back. If nothing else you need a railway and access to trains to train!

Look at your local TOCs websites for careers/jobs.

Dream job ? that notion will soon change , I have no idea why so many people think that train driving is this magical glorious job , its a good job but make no mistake we work hard and its not all sitting around pulling levers its anti social working hours, its mentally tiring and your family life takes a back seat a lot of times , you need to be the right type of person with the right attitude,do your home work there is so much info on this site and others.

Hi there. Start by keeping an eye out for vacancies for trainee drivers, they do come up occasionally and you need to apply straight away as they don't advertise very long due to the high number of applicants. There's plenty of info on this site if you search for it. Good luck

It someone researches the role fully and asks the correct questions then the shift work and unsocial hours the job entails shouldn't come as a surprise.

Do some research into companies. Sign up to there email alerts. Possibly get some driving experience else were. I started as bus driver with first. Then became allocator (supervisor) within 10 months. Left there for metrolink and now got interview on Thursday with FTPE.

Ive been looking at the MetroLink web site for some time now and havent seen any vacancies in a long time. Im from Manchester and the Met is quite close to where i live, tired that now for a few years

Yeah it's a bit like the trains to be honest. They only come up now and again and thousands apply. To be honest I think the group going through training now and possibly 1 more and that's it until at least summer as there looking up skilling all current drivers to know all the lines. Worth keep checking though
