Hey folks,

I'm just wondering, does the SRPS have any paying jobs, or is it all voluntary work? I'm specifically looking at perhaps being a caterer on their RailTours.

Thanks.

Hi there, really depends what you mean by 'Caterer'.

Because all the Stewards, who serve the food among other things, are all volunteers.

As for the folk doing the cooking - I have no idea!

Are you an SRPS member? If you are, I suggest you get in touch with Seonaid Scott (her email will be on the members only section of the SRPS site) and let her know you're interested.

Nah it wouldn't have been cooking (I hate cooking) and I'm not a SRPS member. Oh well.

There was a gap of 6 weeks between me joining and me working my first tour, so if you want to join - you could be working the Oban tour in 4 weeks.

Well I'm looking for paying part-time work; not voluntary. Right now, I'm trying pretty much anything I can think of.

I would suggest contacting supermarkets etc. - they are ideal for part time work.

Jobs in preservation would be hard to come by and very highly sought-after.

I don't think I can be 'exact' but perhaps your expectations are too high if you think it is realistic to be able to apply for a job working on railtours.

There are many volunteers who would like to be paid to work railtours and would be higher up in the 'pecking order' in the unlikely event that such positions were created. If you want to work on railtours, you have to volunteer, and even that can be difficult to get into. For example, there were many people who have offered to volunteer for Retro Railtours, and most have to be declined, simply due to the high volume of requests.

There isn't any money to be made by working on railtours, and operators of railtours do well to break even, so tough is the market (and that is with many people volunteering, for example I don't get paid to do to the Retro website, neither would I ask to be).

But here's the thing - I didn't know any of this, so I figured that it couldn't hurt to ask.

Yes, no problem and you can ask almost any rail-related question here and get an answer :)

I get the impression you don't have much experience of travelling on railtours? If anyone is considering volunteering on a railtour, my advice would be to travel on a few first, and talk to stewards and see the sort of jobs they do. Volunteering on a preserved line would be easier to get into.

I realise voluntary work isn't what you want, but it may be worth considering volunteering on a preserved railway to gain skills that can be used in employment. It also looks good on your CV (especially if you are going for a job that requires skills that you use while volunteering, e.g. customer service skills or similar).

I've never been on a Railtour. I can't find any steam hauled ones that suit (price wise, time wise etc.)

Unfortunately, I don't live near a heritage railway. The nearest is Bo'ness, and that's two trains and a bus away! I've considered it, but it'd only bean option if I get a part-time job so I can pay for traveling.

Have you tried registering with an employment agency? What about bar work? I do sympathise with you though, this is not a great time to be looking for work.
