Never really went for Spud-u-like, but i can remember when i Worked in Guildford, many years ago, there being a mobile jacket spud place, at the bottom of the high street, that always seemed to do well, quite reasonable, if i remember, , i used to often get a jacket and chilli from there,

Used to be one in Reading at the far end of town near inner distribution road. The most remote branch? Never ate there.
In the town where l live in Oxfordshire had a kind of jacket potato outlet( did burger's and fried chicken too) but only lasted a few weeks.
Also had a 'spud pub' on Oxford to Banbury road was very popular in 80's and 90's, but another 'spud pub' has opened just off the A34 with filling like Sunday Roast and other meal fillings.

Jacket spuds have had somewhat of a resurgence due to social media. The pink-haired bloke from Tamworth and the two brothers from Preston spring to mind. The latter have just opened up a restaurant in Liverpool city centre, which proved popular the day it opened.

I do recall a branch in Glasgow, but as I am not a fan of baked potatoes anyway I never frequented it.

Pre-COVID, I used to go to a lot of evening geek meets in Manchester. The branch in the food court of the Arndale Centre was my go-to place for dinner.

I was always too stingy to go there .. you can bake your own potato in a microwave with ease

They aren't the same as when they are done in a proper oven.

In scouts we sometimes do 'spud eggs'. Slice a potato in half but not all the way through, scoop out some of the middle bit, crack an egg into it, close the spud back up and stick a twig through it to keep it shut, wrap back in foil, on the fire. You get a nice gooey egg inside a jacket spud.

Be fun trying that on a Pendolino.

Around 1984-1985 Spud-u-Like were owned by the Jacobs family who also owned BSM. At least one of them was quite connected to the Liberal Party at the time.

There used to be a Spud-u-Like in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, which I think might have been one of their very first outlets. It was relatively conveniently located near the Antiquary on St Stephens St, so I must admit to having had a few bakit tatties out of there over the years, mostly after beer had been taken. A pleasant change to a fish or pie supper and way better than a dreadful kebab!
The crispy chewy tatty skin was the best bit!

Definitely not Spud-u-Like, that place was on the corner of St. Peter's Square and Oxford Street, quite near the present day tram stop(s). They did a multitude of both savoury pancakes and sweet pancakes. It was there from c. 1982 to some time maybe in the late 2000s when the building it was part of was then demolished.

Elizabeth House, DPH was next to Allens Fried Chicken, another chain now long gone I think...

I remember the Wayne and Waynetta from Harry Enfield’s show naming their child after the chain, pronounced “Spud-oooh-licker”.

There’s also Waynetta Slob’s baby Spudulika.

I always wondered where the inspiration for their other daughter came from.

Yesterday had a baked spud from Subway. I won't be having another. The inside of the potato was hard, the outside soggy and it wasn't very warm. Plus the "cheese" they use at Subway doesn't melt very well, it turns to an oily mess.

Here's a picture of the Southend branch of Spudulike. I assume by the long queue and balloons it was taken on the day it opened back in the 70s. I grew up in Southend and remember eating there once or twice. It closed years ago and the shop unit is now a Turkish kebab house. Interesting to see a branch of Dewhurst, the butchers, next door. Another long-gone chain.
