Sprung points

Ok here's one that might make a few people think.

On many lines, particularly rationalised/reduced routes such as the Uckfield line, passing loops exist to allow trains to pass each other. however, many of the points to operate these are sprung, tramway style. My question is this: Given that a facing point needs to be locked to allow a passenger train to pass over it safely, does spring loading count as a lock? What are the rules regarding this?

Surprised no one as come back, I note a lot of what appear spring loaded points on the HOWL, Llandod, Llanrwtyd areas

Not a clue. I was expecting a more explicit thread about sexually aroused pointwork.

Seriously, I don't know anything about the subject at all, but I don't think it would, as I'd imagine the spring would slacken with time and no longer "lock" the points.

Try GC/RT5021 - Train Operated Points - no moves through facing end in the reverse position. FPL provided for facing moves in Normal direction unless permissible speed is < 10 mph. FPL must be unlocked by approach of train movement in trailing direction (reverse). Failure to unlock FPL for trailing move must not result in de-railment but will fail detection until examined.

I believe there are such "passive points" ( as I have heard them called ) near Brookwood where the up Alton line joins the up slow main at Prrbright Junction?

Position light signals are provided in most cases, when the points are correct the PL will show 2 white lights, if the signal is unlit the points will need to be clipped by the train crew, there is a distant signal provided and if the signal and or the points are run through this is classed as a CAT A SPAD.

In most cases, the points indicator is a single yellow light. The position light form is less common.
