Spotting in Birmingham

I'm going to Birmingham in a few weeks time, mainly after classes 172, 196, 323 and 730. Firstly, are the staff at New St and Moor St relaxed about trainspotters, or will I need to seek permission or get a pass? Secondly, which platform(s) at New St provide the best viewpoint?

New street you need a pass from the network rail office, Moor street is run by Chiltern and you don't need to sign in. West side of new street near the signal box is best as you're near the steps for changing platforms. I find platform 6/7 best but sometimes you will need to move if an Avanti pulls in as they sometimes block your view for 10 minutes
