It was fairly decent when it was all free but left after they took away the free package.

I used it when unlimited usage was free and liked it and I now pay a £5 a month for unlimited listening, it's a bit annoying having to fork out money for it but I think it's worthwhile.

I've had the £5/month "Unlimited" version for about a year and think it's great value. I would rather the artists got some money for their work (although they don't get much per play) which wouldn't happen if I downloaded the same music illegally from BitTorrent.

The application combines the Spotify library with any files already on your computer so you can play them all in one place, which is handy. Only downside is that some artists aren't on there, and new releases don't always become available on Spotify straight away, but its coverage is quite comprehensive, with lots of classical/jazz recordings as well as contemporary music.

Spotify had been criticised for undrevaluing the performers and creators of music and for drawing creators into unsatisfactory Contracts. Here's some recent news about Spotify:

As Apple launched a simplified iTunes 11 in 56 new territories this month, Spotify founder Daniel Ek has claimed that his service has paid over £310m ($500m) in royalties to rights holders since launching in 2008.

Ek also revealed that Spotify now has more than five million paying customers globally, with over 20 million active users.

I find it quite depressing to think that there are still some people who would equate 'good service' with 'not paying the creator'. I hope that is not the distinction that you were trying to make.
I remain committed to every measure available to ensure that musicians, composers, songwriters and performers receive their entitled income.

I got Spotify in 2009 (when it was free), although over time more and more obstacles were put in front of the 'free' user.

I don't bother now, Spotify is good for individual tracks but if you only want two or three a month, it's easier to just buy them on iTunes rather than fork out nigh on £10 per month for Spotify Premium.

Or you can fork out a fiver and get unlimited listening (which is what I do).

I pay the full £10. Spotify on the go is great, and I really like the Radio function.

Only downside as others have said is some artists holding back their material which is fair enough. You can always add it manually yourself.

I tried out the free offering a few years back and couldn't find anything worth listening to and haven't been back since.

I'm not a fan of Spotify because a program under a non-free licence has to be very good indeed.

Plus I like the security and the low bandwidth use that comes with local storage. Hard Drive and SD Card storage are dirt cheap these days

I have to admit to not getting the point of it, but I'm sure it must be good for some people the way everyone goes on about it. Possibly just not for me.

I used it when it came out originally free but once they started charging and limiting how many times you could listen it lost its USP IMO and became just another streaming app.
