A small scanned extract taken from the 2005 Quail Maps of the immediate area, with the position of the 66 marked in red and the wagons to the rear of it marked in blue. There really is nothing to see here other than a slightly askew windscreen wiper.

It actually is a very good photograph. The fact that you have to look hard to work out what is going on makes it all the better.

Excuse me if this is wrong but I'm sure someone will correct me (please) . How can both signals be up when the points in front of the 67 are set for the 67 and not for the other train? Shouldn't the rhs signal (as we look at it) be down because the second set of points after the signal are wrong for that line

Some people seem to be making the false assumption that the line the Class 67 is on (the Down Goods Loop) immediately converges into the line on its right (the Down Main). It doesn't; the two lines run parallel for a distance before converging beyond another pair of signals. There's no reason why the two signals in the photo shouldn't both be 'off' at the same time.

For the benefit of those who clearly haven't read the information on the flickr caption linked in the first post of the thread:

The English Welsh and Scottish Railway Limited travelling shunter talks to the driver of English Welsh and Scottish Railway Limited General Motors EMD ‘JT42 HW-HS’ Type 5 Bo-Bo class 67 diesel-electric locomotive number 67014 of Toton Traction Maintenance Depot standing ahead of Castleton East Junction signal box 27 signal (Dn. Goods Loop Home 2) with the Saturdays excepted 11:03 Toton Up Sidings to Castleton Rail Welding Depot (6M23). Wednesday 14th March 2007

Signal CE27 (Down Goods Loop Home 2) was almost a quarter of a mile before signal CE30 (Down Goods Loop Home) which was sited at the end of the Down Goods Loop. (As can be seen from the Quail Map excerpt I posted two days ago!)
