I'm sure we've done this before, but I thought it would be worth giving it another go.

Everyone knows that football is Britain's most popular sport, and to that point it has a hugely successful thread on this forum, but far from all know that it is not the national sport of any of England [Cricket], Scotland [Golf] or Wales [Rugby Union]. I personally enjoy all of these games, and could talk for ages about any of them. But there are others that I enjoy as well, e.g. tennis, athletics, and darts, but as some of you will know my favourite sport is Formula One. I can even explain that (you might recognise this quote from early in the Football thread):

It's a combination of speed, science and strategy which comes complete with spectacular crashes and beautiful women aplenty.

So what sports do you enjoy, and why? Be sure to fill in the poll as well (and where your answer is only covered by a category, as mine is, be sure to give us an indication of what exactly!)

I have to go with Archery, a perfect combination of power and physical self-control, with lashings of psychology. Anyone can take it up, and you don't have to rely on 23 other people turning up.

I see I have assumed sports that one participates in, which might rule most out of contributing to the thread. To watch, I would go for Cricket in the summer, and Rugby in the winter (League in summer). Combination of physical and psychological again.

Certainly an interesting choice; and I one I enjoy as well... but only on the Wii because I'm so hopeless (i.e. for safety reasons!).

Wouldn't that count as a "precision sport"?

Mostly Motorsport for me so chose that but rather WRC (World Rally Championship) BTCC/ DTC and also Le Mans 24.

Second though is cycling for me, and the only event this coming July/ August i will be watching on tv.

I'm a big F1 and BTCC fan, and I'm also keen on football, however my favourite sport is snooker, so I've gone for "precision sports"..

I marked "American sports", although in my case that means baseball - a game that mixes skill, strength, athleticism, strategy and tactics. Like cricket, it has places for many varieties of player - pitchers can rely on speed or guile; hitters can be prized for their power or speed or accuracy (or, in the case of Eddie Gaedel in his only plate appearance in 1951, height); players of the "good field, no hit" variety can still find a place in the team. It has a season of 162 games, long enough to make random chance a smallish factor, but still have close finishes, and for small advantages to make a difference. And it is timeless: games are continued until one team wins - no artificial finishes like taking penalties.

Well yes, I suppose it might. Except that, when you are flinging arrows down a 100yard range, precision is slightly different from tossing a dart from an oche!
And I have no doubt that you are not the most hopeless around. There is a good club in Bath that would polish you up!

I take it you can only pick one here.
In that case although my first love is football I am going to have to say American Sports. I am slowly falling out of love with football and more and more I find myself getting more involved with US sports. Primarily Baseball but American Football and Ice Hockey a close second.
I don't know if its much of a test but I could, and do, happily stay up till 3 or 4am to watch a game live from the States but I couldn't imagine my staying up that late to watch a football game anymore.

I do like the way you've called darts a 'precision sport'! The one sport I did used to enjoy watching was darts back in the day when the 'athletes' were sloshed out of their skulls all the time, could barely stand up straight at the oche, yet still managed to get three small arrows into half a square inch of pigskin from several feet away.

I've said cricket, but I mean test and County Championship cricket rather than one-day. I don't know why, but the longer you make an event, the more tense it seems near the end. As for why I like cricket, I think the secret is that the two teams are trying to do different things.

it's fine, im used to being in the minority!

but the best sport which wasn't on the list is DC EMU's arcing - it's like the diving only more fun - the bigger and noisy the arc, the higher the score

I notice there is a few motorsports fans here, although it's mostly BTCC and F1. While I can't complain about that, as I watch them as well, does anyone else watch the British Superbike Championship at all?

Ive enjoyed afew sports over the years, Used to watch alot of Football & went to watch Bradford City most weeks.

But now mainly watch Rugby League, Keighley Cougars the team i support, though like Hull FC too & sometimes go if Keighley arnt playing, but any clash, Keighley always comes first.

Dont mind watching Rugby Union and been to a handful of games at various levels.

I'm into motorsport. I prefer motorcycle racing, MotoGP, WSB, BSB etc. to car stuff, although I watch most car racing as well. I make parts for motorsport teams at work, including F1 teams so I have something of a professional interest.
