A friend of mine works with a colleague who is hard of hearing so learned to sign.

Her regular habit when approached by sales staff is to simply say and sign "I'm deaf" in a way similar to how someone who is deaf would speak... Usually this would cut the conversation quite short.

Except in a branch of Phones4u where the member of staff started signing back and upselling the data and android features of the phone...

I meant to reply to his earlier. They are trialing advance style tickets that can be purchased up to 5 minutes before departure valid on the booked train only.

Only on selected routes at the moment, Plymouth and Exeter to Bristol rings a bell. As well as some new CDS tickets between the above.

Trial is currently underway.

Do you purchase these tickets as normal? Just had a look on FGW website for Exeter to Bristol, still showing the 'normal' options one would expect to see.

Are the CDS FGW only or interavailable (There are only a limited amount of services between PLY and BRI operated by FGW?)?

I personally suggest some of the smartest public transport advertising liveries have been on Tramlink (as well as some not so smart ones) - the Nescafé one was quite good, in my opinion, and there's a purple one around which is OK - I think this may be promoting the centre of Croydon (no comment), though I could be wrong.

No modern UK trams have yet had onboard shops - that I know of - although a friend on a Croydon CR4000 did once get mistaken by a drunk person as "man from Turkish shop" and asked to sell various interesting foodstuffs. But that's another story.

So I see, thanks for that. Are they quota controlled depending on how many are already booked on the train - for example, the 10:56 from Exeter is an FGW service, yet only have the usual options available.

If HP are advertising tablets on the train I hope the mobile connection is better than most trains I travel on. For mist journeys I rarely get a signal and when I do its so slow sleeping is the better option.

I've had 10+ megabits without any trouble on FGW, from Paddington to Bristol. Yes there are the odd areas were it might drop to 2G or altogether, but you're soon back up and running.

I think it all depends on the network. At least the HSTs don't have solar reflective film that kills the signal like some other stock.

Most phone networks have worked very hard to ensure most railway lines have a good degree of coverage, but in recent years with the explosion in data usage, I suppose capacity is the bigger concern. No point having signal but data rates of 0.001Mbps!
