Splitting Tickets to Newcastle

I just have a quick query, i was looking to take a trip to Newcastle on the 21st of this month from Glasgow and have noticed that the cheapest return is £38 although tried seeing if it would be cheaper to go via Carlisle using advance singles which currently works out at £30.50 by splitting tickets from Glasgow to Carlisle and then Carlisle to Newcastle although when i am on the booking sites and add Journey it then obviously comes up journey 1 and journey 2 just wondering if first of all doing this is allowed and secondly would i have to complete the journeys in sequential order so have to do Journey 1 then 2 or as i would have to do complete part of journey 1 and then onto journey 2 and then vice versa on the return.

If I understand things, you have four Advance singles:

• Glasgow - Carlisle
• Carlisle - Newcastle
• Newcastle - Carlisle
• Carlisle - Glasgow

And you're worried because they show up in the basket with A and D as one journey and B and C as a second journey?

If so, you don't need to worry. As long as you board the correct train as shown on the ticket you'll be fine.

Slightly cheaper to split at Haydon Bridge if you're travelling after 9am. £9.90 day return from Newcastle to Haydon Bridge and two £9.00 Virgin & Connections advances thence to Glasgow.

If doing your own splits (rather than using Trainsplit) you do need to be careful, but none of the above is a concern.

What you do need to do is ensure that the tickets (regardless of the order they are booked in) all do link up, are all for the correct dates and times, and the minimum interchange times are fully adhered to and try to avoid changing the journey (many companies charge £10 per ticket to make changes; trainsplit charge £10 per transaction).

It is total legal and legit to use several tickets for one journey, and this is enshrined in the National Rail Conditions of Travel.

Thanks Yorkie for the reply i have gone ahead and booked the tickets Glasgow-Carlisle on the 1109 costing £6.50 advance single arriving into Carlisle 12:28 and then a single from Carlisle to Newcastle at £7.50 on the 13:32 service arriving at Newcastle at 15:03 and then the return journey at 16:22 with an £8 single arriving into Carlisle at 18:00 and then finally leaving Carlisle on the 18:47 service with another advance single at £8.50 totalling £30.50.

As a side note i did go onto the trainsplit site but it gave me the same fare of £38 which i already noted as the direct return fare.

Yeah - sorry about that, we're currently limited by our journey planner. The new site (which I know I keep promising will be available soon, but it will!) finds your splits along with some more options (including some good advances).
