I have an idea on how to reduce overcrowding on the Central line I know this probably would not happen due to the cost but putting the cost to the side would this be possible?

Split the Central Line in to 2 with the West Ruislip and Ealing Broadway branches remaining with the Central line running through the existing route to Woodford, Hainault via Chigwell and Epping this way all Central line services could serve just one of the one eastern branches meaning a more frequent service could operate between London and Woodford, Loughton and Epping.

The main Hainault service via Newbury Park could run as it currently does between Hainault and Wanstead but west of Wanstead instead on joining the Central line from Woodford at Leytonstone could run in new tube tunnels to Stratford with Underground stations at Leytonstone, Leyton and Stratford and then continuing underground via Bow, Limehouse and Shadwell (possibly with stations) and then a new underground station at Fenchurch Street/Tower Hill and running in to Bank where it could either run under the DLR and Northern lines with new longer platforms and then take over the Waterloo and City line (with platform extensions or new platforms st Waterloo) or could be a brand new line from Bank running in Tube tunnels slightly north of the District/Circle line to help reduce crowding on these routes and then at the Western end could either take over the Wimbledon District branch or use the District line tracks in to Kensington Olympia. Of these two options I would have thought the Waterloo and City would be better as longer trains would operate and could provide a platform at Blackfriars, but this option could be harder to do because of the Layout at Bank.

Whatever happens at the Western side of this line extension I do think splitting the Central line could help a lot to reduce overcrowding as although Crossrail will help in the Central section the current Central line East of Stratford wont benefit much form this. And this could allow a more frequent service on both the Hainault and Woodford branches, Hainault does have the platform as two platforms could be for the new lines services (southbound) and one for Central line services terminating from Woodford, there are crossovers in the right place plus the Central line could still access the Depot.

Crossrail is going to make one heck of a dent in the Central line's demand quite soon anyway.

But Mainly between Ealing Broadway and Stratford which will massively help the Central line but services past Stratford to Hainault and Woodford/Epping are still extremely busy in peak hours and Crossrail will not serve these places

But by removing a lot of Central London transfer traffic there will be more space for Epping/Loughton/Hainault/Ruislip commuters.

But trains are often full and standing from Stratford eastwards so surly by just removing the central London commuters the number of people who are travelling east of Stratford will stay the same so services will still be overcrowded

Welcome to London! Of course rush hour services will be crowded. But Crossrail attempts to relieve the worst of that crowding.

Nobody is ever going to invest anything in taking over or extending the Waterloo & City. Extending the Waterloo platforms through either of the depot or the Bakerloo/Northern escalators isn’t going to happen. Bank orientation is completely wrong for eastward extensions. You’d almost certainly need a whole new line, and for previously discussed reasons no one is planning any new ‘tube sized’ lines, apart from maybe the Bakerloo - Lewisham extension.

Would it be possible to convert the Hainault branch to heavy rail rail via a new tunnel to central London or connect it to crossrail sround the stratford area?

Yes, just about anything is possible. Wasn’t Hainault main line rail before WW2 anyway? I think one of the early proposals for Crossrail 2 included a Central Line option, but they decided differently after consultation.

The Epping branch was going to be on Crossrail 2 before it was changed to New Southgate

Thanks, I was thinking of looking up exactly which part it was, cos I couldn’t remember, but you’ve saved me the job...

Part of the present Hainault loop is in tube sized tunnels under the A12. The heavy rail connection ran from Ilford to Newbury Park and is now largely built over.

The former connection at Stratford, which could be reinstated although I can't think of a good reason for doing so, is before the two branches diverge.

Crossroad should also reduce loadings on the Leytonstone-Newbury Park station as some people will shift to the nearest on the GE line.
