Splits/ticket advice Manchester Piccadilly - Tenby

Afternoon folks,

Looking for best ticket advice Manchester Piccadilly - Tenby 2 Adults 2 Children. Departing 22nd June returning 29th.

Done a few splits around Shrewsbury, Cardiff, Swansea but still getting very similar to the through SVR price.

Any ideas? Don't really want advances as need to have a bit of flexibility. But wanting to depart AM on both days.

Also have a Family railcard.

Out of interest, how do you define the "best" advice - is that the absolute cheapest (including stopping services, rail replacement buses etc) or the quickest route? or something in between?

What have you found so far? Have you tried trainscanbecheaper.info and have you looked up any fares on brfares.com?

Had a play with the Avantix at work last night but struggled somewhat to find anything cheaper.

The SVR is £89.10 Any Permitted, or £82.70 via the Heart of Wales Line.

TCBC suggests splitting Manchester - Farnworth - Ffairfach - Llandybie - Tenby.

However Farnworth is just near Bolton, so it's likely you can skip the Manchester - Farnworth ticket.

The shortest route Farnworth - Ffairfach is

Farnworth - Manchester Oxford Road - Manchester Piccadilly - Crewe - Shrewsbury and then via the HoW.

So this ticket is valid to start short from Manchester Piccadilly/Oxford Road

Farnworth - Ffairfach is £35.60 SVR
Then
Ffairfach - Llandybie £4.20 for 2 SDS
Llandybie - Tenby £19.20 SVR

= £60. So around 1/3 cheaper than the Any Permitted, and 27% cheaper than the HoW-only route.

Should be around £95 with the railcard for 4.

Thanks for that. Do all the trains along that route stop at the stations where the tickets are split.

Or basically how can I explain the validity to the guard should my friends get questioned? (Aside from the Farmworth - Manchester bit which I understand!

All Heart of Wales line services stop at the split stations and the route is reasonable so you won't get questioned. (I will be very surprised if it happens.)

There's basically only one useful HoW line train per day. All trains stop at Ffairfach anyway. Llandybie is a request stop.

I actually checked and it's actually cheaper NOT to split at Llandybie, because of the minimum fare on the railcard for children.

So:
Farnworth - Ffairfach £60.50 SVR
Ffairfach - Tenby £41.20 SVR

=£101.70 for four.

Shouldn't be a problem.

Route is:

Manchester - Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury - Craven Arms (rail replacement on the 22nd)
Craven Arms - Llanelli
Llanelli - Tenby
