Split tickets and delays on DB

Obviously in the UK, two or more tickets can be used for one journey, and if using one or more advances, the next train can be used in the event of a delay.

My understanding is that on the Deutsche Bahn network, two or more tickets can be used for one journey as there is nothing in the conditions of carriage that prevents it. However, what happens if my train from Innsbruck - Kufstein (using a Normalpreis ticket) is delayed meaning I miss the connection at Kufstein for Munich and beyond (advance ticket)?

I'm aware that if it was all on one through ticket, DB would allow me to catch the next train. But will this be the case with my separate tickets? And what if it's the last train of the night - will DB put me up for a night or sort out a taxi like the British tocs would or would they treat it as two separate journeys?

I ask because I have the option of allowing 15 mins at Kufstein, 45 mins, or 75 mins. I don't want to sit around for ages but I don't want to be stranded if things go wrong either!

They will take care of you. Some friends I know also used multiple tickets, and even with delays they were helped.

Maybe related to the fact that it's almost all under one umbrella, so there's none of this 'no using a VT with an LM ticket' nonsense if things go wrong.

I've noticed that quite a lot of stations are unstaffed but I figure there'll be a help point or something around.

Back in 2010, I visited the Stuttgart area to see my friend who was living there at the time, my first trip to Germany (and first time on a plane!)

We took a day to take a trip to Cologne and booked ICE there and Regional back (both First Class). The Regional necessitated a change somewhere (couldn't tell you where) but one of the trains was cancelled. We got put on the ICE back to Stuttgart which was, of course, a much quicker (and had been a lot more expensive) option too. I don't think we were on split tickets though, but still, gave a very good impression

Just to point out that you're not DB's responsibility within Austria , that falls to ÖBB. However if your ÖBB service is delayed I've no doubt they'll help you out. There's a staffed counter during the day at Kufstein and they have a 24 hour hotline too.

That's part of their T&Cs. IIRC when a delay would exceed 20 min you are entitled to use an Intercity train with a regional ticket (suitably enosed in theory). In some cases you may need to pay up and then get a refund though.
