Sorry if this has been raised before, but I am still relatively new to this site. Like many, I look for the cheapest fares by using split-ticketing. The attitude of the TOCs seems to be "we can't do anything about it, but we wish it didn't happen"
I occasionally travel between North Wales and Grantham and by splitting at Nottingham, can save up to £10 or so. But I'm always wary when using the last train of the day, which because of the very early "last" train from Nottingham to Grantham at 2059, is around 1615 from Llandudno, changing at Chester, Crewe and Derby. The penultimate train in the link, the XC from Derby arrives Nottingham at 2005, usually leaving plenty of time for my last train eastwards, but on one occasion my first train from North Wales was substantially delayed, missing the connection at Chester and therefore Crewe, causing me to arrive in Nottingham 1 hour later, missing my last train homewards. No problem. As I happened to have a through ticket on that occasion, the Nottingham supervisor kindly laid on a taxi for me to Grantham, charging ATW, whose initial train was delayed. But what if I had two tickets -one from Llandudno to Nottingham and another from Nottingham to Grantham? Would ATW had said its respobsibility ended when I arrived at Nottingham, and would EMT have said "sorry, but it's my responsibility to get to the station in time for the last train?" A taxi from Nottingham at my expense rather negates any saving in buying split tickets!
