Split Ticketing with Plus Bus?

Hello all.

I might need to go to somewhere a few miles beyond the limits of the Cambridge Plus Bus zone later this week. The operator concerned is Whippet.

Does anyone have experience of using a PlusBus ticket to get to the limit of a given city's zone, before returning to the driver to buy a normal ticket for the remainder of the same journey? Is split ticketing like this ever accepted?

In the opposite direction (and in another university city), an Oxford Bus driver sold me a single from Abingdon to the boundary of the City Zone (well, the Park & Ride actually) after I showed him my day ticket.

I can't see why the driver in your case would not sell you a ticket from an appropriate point en-route to your final destination (I'd be inclined to explain the situation on boarding), although that's not any kind of guarantee.

Incidentally, I e-mailed the bus company in advance but they unhelpfully advised me to buy one of their South Oxfordshire tickets to cover my needs. Since that costs an unreasonable £8 (somewhat more than the combination I did use), I declined.

It is possible that the driver would not be able to sell you what you need when you board but he should sell it you at the point you you need it. (this depends on his machine and company policy).

Ask him when you board. He will be able to tell you whether you need to return at the boundary point or just pay there and then.
