Split ticket, season and variable train route

Hi folks. I've come up with a query around travelling from Birmingham New Street to Bristol Temple Meads.

I hold a season that covers Birmingham New Street to University, and I regularly see the CrossCountry Bristol trains pass through University, so I was planning to buy a ticket(s) for University to Bristol. However on looking, it appears that not all the Cross Country trains between Birmingham and Bristol pass through University...

Is it really necessary to understand which path a train would use in order to use such tickets correctly? It feels intuitively wrong so I feel like I must be missing something.

University to Bristol is the same price as Birmingham to Bristol, and therefore Birmingham Group is a valid routeing point, so University to Bristol is valid via either route.

If Birmingham-Bristol is the same price as University-Bristol, surely the OP might as well just buy a Birmingham to Bristol ticket, and ignore the fact they hold a season ticket?

Always worth doing that, for lots of journeys (including advances on some operators with a +connections ticket) ticket prices can be the same from a fairly wide area of stations.
