Split Shifts

There are heavy rumours that SWT drivers are to be approached and offered a large pay rise with the condition of agreeing to work split shifts. By This I mean working 3-4 hours during the morning peak and then returning to do there last 3-4 hours during the evening peak. If this is the case how could the Hidden recommendations including a 12hr rest period between shifts be sustained? Has this approach been made to East Midlands Trains as also being a stagecoach company? Some of the Train Crew I have spoken too with regards to this fear that maybe it’s a backdoor approach to bringing in Part time driving staff, as this appears to be SWT goal having already achieved changing some of its station and ticket office staff to part time.

Whilst I can't shed any light on the question asked I think it's a fair assumption that companies are gonna be trying all sorts to shave costs down. Although they aren't safety critical, I know that the catering people on the WAG do a 16 hour day, with a long break in the middle like a split shift. They work the train in both directions and have PTS so they can leave Canton for their break. I just can't believe they get back to Holyhead and finish about 2100, then return ready at 0500 the next day. Their roster seems nice on the face of it though, work Mon and Tue one week, then Wed-Fri the next, so one week they get seven rest days (Wed-Tue), the next week they get two (Sat-Sun). And of course they always get the weekend off

There already are part time Drivers, we've got a couple at Nott's are job-share.
Not heard anything about split shifts mentioned here, but i think they are worrying about "other" matters at the minute.

I expect we'll be hearing a bit more about that down the old grapevine. The only worry is that if the carrot is big enough there will be a sufficient number tempted to take it.

split shifts are ok in general but what if you live a good few miles away, it takes me on average 45 minutes to get to work (15 mins on train, leave home 30 mins before train is due), 45 to get home, so if your going to do that twice a day then that could be an extra three hours traveling on top of your day so that would be big fat NO from me.

I honestly cant see how it would work and still keep to 'hidden' the PNB be it 30mins or 3hrs still forms part of your working day.
